“Yeah. With Jake Daniels. Of all the things.”

“She seemed happy enough.”

She was taken care of. And that was a big load off Kit’s mind. When she had first come back to the ranch with him, Kit had been... Not very happy. He knew Jake from the rodeo circuit, and as far as he was concerned, Jake was a bad bet. He had been the kind of guy who was... Well, he was like all of them. He was a ho. A shameless, uninhibited man ho. And, the idea of him marrying Kit’s sister had gone down like a lead balloon. But he had proved to Kit that he loved Callie. And more than that, he had proved that he was committed to Callie’s safety. And that mattered. It mattered a whole hell of a lot. Because he had spent all of Callie’s childhood worrying about her safety, and then she had gone and gotten the rodeo bug. And she couldn’t do something sane like riding barrel horses. No. His sister had gone and gotten the bug to ride saddle bronc. And she had been insistent about it. Their dad had done basically everything in his power to block her from doing it, but she had gotten around that by marrying Jake and getting access to her trust fund.

But, the thing was, she was great at it.

She was great at riding saddle bronc. And she really brought something fresh and new to the event. She had invigorated rodeo-goers. And he had to be proud of her. From a feminist perspective even. But as an older brother, not so much. And there were just two different kinds of things that existed inside him. He was all for equality. But a lot less so when it came to the health and safety of his little sister. Let somebody else blaze trails. Blazing trails was dangerous, and he had a hard time admitting that it was all right for Callie to be out there doing it.

But Jake cared about her safety so much that it gave Kit some room to breathe.

“I’m planning to go up to the wedding ranch and check things out tomorrow,” Kit said. “Get some supplies delivered, get the house opened up and set to go.”

“I’ve got a date,” said Boone. “So, I won’t be up till a little later.”

“You have a date,” Kit said. “With who?”

“You know, I don’t remember her name. But, she’s one of the rodeo queens. She’s coming through town, and I’m not gonna miss it.”

“Great. Enjoy your booty call.”

“I promised Cara I’d help her with a few things. But I’ll be there the day before the wedding.”

“You better the hell be. That’s when the party’s happening.”

“Great. Well. We’ll see you out there in a couple of days,” said Flint.

“Yeah. Assholes. See you in a couple of days.”

Shelby had somehow managed to get all the baskets of favors into the back of her truck, and all of the favors for the bachelorette party into the back seat. She was feeling pretty good about everything. She had some great favors for the bachelorette party, and she had been mean.

Because Juniper had been mean to her.

The problem with having your equally young and immature sister plan your bachelorette party when you were getting married at eighteen was thateverythingwas immature.

Penis everything.

And so, Shelby had retaliated. Meanly. And with grown-ass adult money and the full power of the internet, that meant she’d been able to take what Juniper had accomplished and turn it up to the tenth power.

And she didn’t care if her sister liked it or not.

Now, there would be real decorations too, but she’d had to get penis straws, a penis crown and, best of all, a very large vibrator to be the centerpiece of some flowers. She figured that Juniper and Chance might appreciate the gift.

They could take it on their honeymoon.

For just a moment, that stopped her short. She really didn’t want to think about her sister hooking up and having sex. But the subject of honeymoons, and the thought of the vibrator, brought it all close to mind.

You don’t need the guy. Just the vibrator.

And she had her own, thank you very much. She had invested in a pretty decent collection of them during this stretch of single time.

Eventually... Eventually there would have to be a guy. Wouldn’t there? Eventually there would have to be one just so she didn’t go crazy.

Except, she couldn’t imagine it. Couldn’t imagine being with anybody except for...

Unbidden, an image of Kit popped into her mind. No. She had spent way too many years being disciplined about him. She had never fantasized about him, no matter how it had hovered around the edges of her consciousness. Not while she was with Chuck, and not since. She was not going to undo all that good moral fiber in a moment of weird weakness.

So she shut that out of her mind. She was fine. And she wasn’t envious. If she wanted to hook up, she could go hook up. It wasn’t even flattering. Men were disgusting. They would literally hump a tree if given half the chance. It wasn’t like she wouldn’t be able to find somebody. There was nothing wrong with her.
