“Yeah, I guess so.”

“Go get your suitcase.”

“It’s just an overnight bag.”

She disappeared, then came back a moment later. She looked... She looked afraid. At least, as far as he could tell with only her cell phone flashlight lit up.

“You don’thaveto come with me. I can try to figure out why the lights went out here.”

“No,” she said. “No. You don’t have to do that. It’s fine. Let’s just go. I’m starving. And with the lights out I can’t cook any food and...”

“Do you have stuff in the fridge?” he asked.

“I have it in a cooler.”

“I brought some steak. And I do have power. So I’m happy to grill for us both.”

“I don’t want to eat your steak,” she said, wrinkling her nose.

“Hey. You offered to lend me a penis. So... I feel like it’s a fair trade.”

She choked, and tried to cover it with a cough. “Well, I didn’t bring any of them with me.”

“I’ll take a rain check.”

“That’s very reasonable of you,” she said, still wheezing.

“I’m very reasonable.”

He reached out and took the overnight bag from her hands. But this time, he was careful not to touch her. When he had tried to help with the beer, he had touched her. And it had set off a whole thing.

He didn’t need to go setting off whole things. Not again.

So they walked across the field together in relative silence, toward the bachelor pad.

And when they walked up the front porch and inside, she made a scoffing noise. “Well. I can see why they were putting you all up in here.”

“Yeah. Who was all staying in your place?”

“Your sister. My mother. A couple of friends from high school. But this is going to be...”

“Oh yeah. There’s a lot of us. And it’s a lot of testosterone.”

“Sounds great.”

“I don’t really think you mean that.”

“Well, since you’re offering to cook me steak, I’m actually not going to push you.”

She hung back, though in the doorway, as he went inside.

He went into the kitchen, and got the steaks out of the fridge. They were sitting in a marinade, because he wasn’t an animal. The thing about being a bachelor was if you were committed to that kind of lifestyle, then you needed to learn how to take care of yourself. And Kit liked good food.

He didn’t see the point in living like a trash animal just because in many ways he philosophically was one.

“I’m grilling anyway,” he said. “I had it preheating outside.”

“Wow. I feel kind of honored.”
