“All right. Let’s start getting this thing up.” They started placing the poles, the supports and the different sections.

He found a ladder in the back of the barn, and they set it up, him working by stretching as tall as he could go and using the full length of his arms, and her needing the ladder every step of the way.

She showed him how the tulle was supposed to wrap around the frame, and she had to admit, he made a very skilled laborer.

“You would be handy to have around the house,” she said, not thinking until the words escaped.

He looked at her, lifting a brow. “Would I?”

“To reach tall things. And open jars.”

“I do know how to do both of those things.”

“That’s all I meant by it.”

“I didn’t think you meant anything else.”

“Somehow I don’t believe you.”

“That is between you and your God. And not my concern.”

“Everybody else is coming up today.”

“Yep.”

“I guess we better get that bachelor and bachelorette party thing ready.”

“Definitely.”

He took a step toward her, and she found herself scrambling back as if he had physically touched her.

He didn’t react strongly, but it was the slight jolt in his frame that told her she had surprised him with her response.

“See you later, then. At the barbecue.”

“Yeah. See you then.”

And she had never needed to get away from another person so badly in her entire life. Especially not while feeling the intense desire to stay with him.
