And it was probably good that Chance’s wife had been working, or the whole story would’ve been blown already.

Jace looked at him with no small amount of suspicion on his face. But then, Jace had been there when Shelby had shown up today.

“Yeah. So. There’s no easy way to say it. But... I’m...” He didn’t really know how you were supposed to announce this. He was having a baby? He was going to be a dad? And so probably the worst iteration of that came out of his mouth. “Shelby is pregnant.”

“Dammit, Kit,” Chance shouted, practically crossing three bar stools to get near him. “You knocked up my sister-in-law?”

“Yeah. I did. So... There’s that.”

“Juniper is going to kill you. Hell. Does she know?”

“She does know. She just wasn’t allowed to tell you until I knew, and it turns out she’s been working since then, obviously, or you would know.”

“When did you find out?” Chance asked.

“I know when he found out,” Jace said. “That’d be about three hours ago.”

“Yes it would. So it’s not like it’s a secret that’s been being sat on for a hell of a long time. Except Shelby has known for about a month. But she didn’t tell anybody. But she confirmed it today.”

“Right,” Chance bit out. “Because of course you fucked her at my wedding.”

“She fucked me back. So, maybe dial your umbrage down a little bit.”

“Are you going to marry her?”

“Well, Chance, I offered. I offered like the salt-of-the-earth, code-of-the-West motherfucker that I am. And she said no.”

“Of course she did,” Chance said, snorting.

And he was a little bit surprised to hear his brother ruefully accept that. Except... His brother got it. That was the thing.

“You know you can’t tell them anything,” Kit said, meaning the Sohappy sisters in general.

“Yeah. I do.”

“And because of you, I can’t go hard-line on it.”

Chance nodded. “I can see that.”

“So unless your wife can talk some sense into her...”

“My wife is better at inciting violence than talking sense, and again, I like that about her, but I just don’t know that she’s going to be the one for this.”

“Damn,” Jace said.

Boone shook his head.

“So what are you going to do?” asked Flint.

“Well, I’m going to go on the offensive. I’m going to prove to her that she can’t do this without me.”

“That’s what you want,” Jace said.

“I’m having a kid. I wasn’t going to do this. It wasn’t going to be my life. It wasn’t going to be what I chose to do. But it’s where I’m at. You know as well as I do that sometimes shit just happens.”

“Though in this case,” Flint said, “shit happened because you didn’t wear a condom.”

“Yeah. I am aware that I have responsibility in this.”
