“Was it about Cara?”
“Actually no. But way to go. You just shone a big ole spotlight on yourself.”
“Well, no. Generically and to Cara. Cara needs to be protected at all costs. She’s been through enough. She’s a strong woman, and I care about her. But it isn’t like that. Protecting her means... Never... Ever.”
“What’s so wrong with you?”
“I could ask you the same question, Kit.”
“It’s not about me,” Kit said. “About love in general. It’s a lot of work. I love you. I love everyone in this family. I’m going to have a kid. I... I don’t need more. I don’t need heavier. I know that Shelby feels the same way. Life has taken it out on her pretty hard too.”
“Well, Godspeed. Make sure you include dessert with dinner.”
“Good idea,” he said.
He wasn’t happy with any of this, but he had a plan. And that was the kind of man Kit was. If it was broken, he’d do his best to fix it. He may not have wanted to take on something like this, but he was now. And he would do the absolute best with it that anybody ever could.
