And when they parted, it was over. She had a husband. Another husband. But Kit wasn’t another of anything. He was... Somehow she had married Kit Carson.

And she didn’t know how she was ever going to get her head around that. She expected him to drive her back home. But he didn’t.

“Kit...”

“I decided we ought to have a honeymoon.”

“A honeymoon?”

“Yeah. Just...figured we’d stay at a nice place on the Deschutes River. Enjoy the view. Some good food.”

And she found that she didn’t have words. She didn’t even know what to think. He turned on the radio, and there was a Jimmie Allen song on, and she tried to focus on the lyrics, and not on her confusion as they drove on the highway, headed north.

“Where exactly are we going?”

“Bend,” he said.

“Oh. I didn’t know you were wanting to go into the city.”

He chuckled. “I just thought it might be nice to go somewhere a little... You know. Nice.”

It took two hours to get there. They pulled into a hotel that she’d never been to before. Right there on the Deschutes River.

“I packed an overnight bag for us,” he said as he reached into the back of the truck and produced it, before getting out and heading into the lobby.

And she just sat there. Feeling stupid.

Then she got it together, unbuckling and scrambling out behind him, walking into what was a beautiful, woodsy room with high ceilings and metal art all over the place. Fish and elk wrought from iron standing proud over stone tiles.

“This is beautiful,” she said.

“I just wanted... I wanted something to mark the day.”

And suddenly, she just wanted him. She wanted him, because it might do something to blot out the feelings that were rioting through her. The things that felt sharp and jagged and a little bit broken.

It took a moment for them to get all checked in, and then they went upstairs, to the suite down at the end of the hall.

“Kit,” she breathed. “This is too much.”

And she hadn’t fully appreciated until just then that she had married a man with money. She just hadn’t thought about it at all. Well. That was... Handy. She supposed. Except she didn’t really want for much of anything in her life. Except she...

And then she couldn’t think, because Kit was kissing her.

And at least when Kit was kissing her, she could blot out all her doubts and just feel.
