“This isn’t love. Not as I understand it. This... This is something else. It’s chemistry. It’s desire. I want you. I want to be with you. I like you to do things to me that I’ve never liked before. I like doing things to you that I’ve never liked before. I always knew I wanted your body, Kit. But that’s the kind of man you are. You’re a really great body.”

Guilt lashed at her.

“Is that all?”

“It’s all you can be for me.”

“Well, I’m the body that married you. I’m the body that helped to make this baby. I’m the body that loves you. But I’m gonna prove to you that there’s not a time frame on this. I want you to take my truck, and go home. Take all the time you need.”

“This is our honeymoon.”

“You just said you didn’t want all that.”

She felt like her pain was pushing her into the ground. Like she was being driven farther and farther into a hole.

“I just want to leave you with one thing.”

“What’s that?”

He turned around and took something out of his overnight bag. The box that had his ring in it.

“Now what I want you to do is keep this. And when you’re ready, you put it on my finger.”

“I won’t... I can’t...”

“Then you give it back to me.”

She couldn’t, though. She couldn’t make her hand release it. She wanted to be able to have him in her life. She wanted to keep sleeping with him. She wanted him to be a father to her child. She wanted... She wanted all of that without any risk. And it was a misery. Standing there frozen. Not being able to take either thing that she wanted. Not being able to be... As strong as she wanted to be. As good as she wanted to be. As brave.

“That’s what I thought. Hang on to it.”

“How are you going to get home?” she said.

“Don’t worry about me, Shelby. I’ll figure it out. I’ve got family. I’ve got time.”

She took the truck keys, and she took the ring. And she started to collect her clothes. Then she walked out of her honeymoon suite like she hadn’t just entered an hour before. She walked out with her heart on the ground, or maybe it was just back in the room with him. All she knew was that she needed to protect something. Except right now... She felt like she didn’t have anything.

You have his truck keys, and his wedding ring.

Yeah. She had those two things. And what the hell was she supposed to do with them?
