“No, not really.”

“Then, why did you call me?” I ask.

“I thought that was what people did the day after a date,” he says.

I laugh. Then, he laughed with me.

“I guess I’m not good at this. I just wanted to tell you I had a good time with you last night. Probably the most fun I’ve had in a while.”

“Yeah, as far as fake dates go, it’s the best I’ve ever been on,” I agree.

“Had a lot of fake dates, have you?”

“I’ve had a lot of bogus dates. Do they count?” I ask.

He chuckles. “I’m looking forward to this weekend.”

Oddly enough, so am I.

“I plan to put you to work, mister. So, don’t get too excited.”

“I don’t mind hard work,” he says.

“Good. I hope you have an easy couple of days at the firehouse, and I’ll see you bright and early Saturday morning.”

“I’ll be there. You have a good day.”

“Talk to you later,” I reply.

“Bye, Maxi.”

He clicks off the line, and I smile. That ex of his is crazy. He’s adorable. If you’re into sweet, thoughtful men, that is.

I spend the rest of the afternoon soaking up the sun with Alanis keeping me company.

At four o’clock, I pack it in, make my way to the office to use the restroom, and tell the girls good-bye. Then, I head back home to get ready for a night of slinging drinks.

During my walk to the cabin, I take in the tranquil gravel path, lined with tall sugar maples, and it dawns on me that relaxing by the pool was not a bad way to spend a day.

“Where is the Challenger?” Maxi asks as she descends her steps.

Today, she is wearing a white tank top, covered by a pair of loose denim coveralls. Her hair is pulled up and wrapped in a red bandana.

“I thought the truck was more appropriate for a day of work. I loaded the bed with ladders, tarps, a power washer, and a weed eater,” I explain.

She furrows her brow and plants her hands on her hips. “You just don’t want me to drive your hot rod,” she accuses.

“I’m a man of my word. We’ll switch them out before we go to the campground.”

“I’m gonna hold you to that,” she says.

I load the truck with the small gasoline generator and sander she borrowed from my dad along with the other supplies she had waiting by the steps.

“I have water, too, and I made some sandwiches in case you get hungry,” she says as she comes out of the house, carrying a large cooler.

Hurrying up to help her, I take the load and put it into the backseat of the truck cab.
