“We’re just getting to know each other better. She’s fine,” Sara-Beth tells him.

“I don’t know. Between the tears and the choking, I was starting to get concerned.”

“I’m good, I promise.”

He leans down and kisses my nose. Then, he rejoins the men.

Sara-Beth watches him as he goes. “This is the most carefree I’ve seen that boy in years.” She turns to me. “Thank you.”

I’m the one who should be thanking them. They’ve given me a lot to think about.

Damn cocktails.

“Don’t think I didn’t notice that we never went and picked the Challenger up,” Maxi says as we exit the campground.

“You’re the one who distracted me with the skinny-dipping. It didn’t leave us any time to go switch vehicles.”

“Excuses,” she teases.

“Tomorrow, we’ll take it for a spin.”

She yawns. “We’d better.”

I pull up to her cabin, and she gives me a sleepy smile.

“You wanna come in? I can make us some cocoa, and we can watch a serial killer documentary.”

“You drink cocoa?” I ask.

“Dude, cocoa is awesome. I make it from scratch. It’s made with milk, and warm milk helps you sleep.”

“Is that right?”

“Yep.”

“I could use a good night’s sleep,” I say.

She opens her door and steps out, and then she pops her head back in. “Then, get your ass out of the truck.”

I do as she asked and follow her inside.

“I’ll start the cocoa. The remote on the ottoman controls the television and my movie profile. Find us something scary and scandalous,” she says.

“Scandalous murder mystery coming right up,” I declare.

Plopping down on the plush, super-comfy couch, I grab the remote and start flipping through the documentary options till I find one calledEvil Lives Here. The opening score alone sends chills down the spine.

“I’m going to slip into something more comfortable,” Maxi yells from the kitchen.

Something comfortable. All righty.

I hit pause on the program, set the remote aside, and kick off my boots.

Ten minutes later, Maxi sits down beside me, carrying two steaming mugs. She has changed into a pair of Baby Yoda pajama pants and an oversize T-shirt that says,Just the Tip, I Promise, with a photo of a knife with blood on the tip.

I chuckle at the sight of her.
