“How could you throw away what we had for this freak show? Everyone just saw her attack me.”
“Are you going to play the victim now? Fine. You need a villain? I’m your girl,” Maxi shouts, still laughing.
“You’re better than this, Corbin!”
Susanna stomps off before I can say anything in return, and I walk over and offer my arms out to Maxi and Erin.
They each clutch a hand, and I hoist them to their feet.
“Come on. I’m sure Hazel has your food ready,” Erin says as she dusts off the ass of her jeans.
Mike and Anna walk up beside us.
“Dude, that was awesome,” he says as Maxi follows Erin to get our food.
“Everybody catch it?” I ask.
“Almost, and those who didn’t will see it soon. I saw Nick’s wife filming it with her phone.”
Fuck.
“Great. Just what I need. Everyone in town seeing their fire chief engaged in a domestic,” I grumble.
“Like anyone cares. I just wish your new girl had landed that right hook,” Anna says.
My eyes go to her.
“Susanna was out of line,” she continues.
“Damn straight. Best fair ever,” Mike exclaims.
He throws his hand out in a fist. I don’t bump it.
He gives up and wraps his arm around his pregnant wife and leads her toward Hazel’s truck.
“Come on. My boy is hungry,” he says.
Anna leans against him, and he lays his free hand on her bump.
“This has been a crazy evening,” someone mumbles as they walk past me.
They aren’t wrong.
By the time we leave the firehouse, we are exhausted and stuffed with fried food products.
Maxi dozes off in the passenger seat of my truck, clutching a giant panda bear, and I love the sight. I take an extra-long route to her cabin because I don’t want to disturb her.
As soon as I pull in and put the truck in park, her eyes blink open.
“We’re here,” I whisper.
She yawns as she sits up and grabs the door handle.
I hate that I’m on shift and have to get back to the station because I want nothing more than to follow her inside and make sleepy love to her.
She swings the door open, and I grab her hand. She looks back to me, but her expression is one of pain.
