“La ragazza deve andare con lui,” Angelo says in Italian. The girl must go with him.

Marco shakes his head. “No, she does not.”

Of course, more men pile out of the casino behind us, all from the Medici camp.

“Please,” I say to Marco as he looks at me. The defeat in his eyes makes me sad but also, I see so much that he’s not saying. He really does care about me.

I reach up to him and he flinches slightly at my sudden movement.

I kiss him on the cheek and whisper, “I’ll call you. I’ll be safe.”

“Marco!” Angelo insists.

Marco brushes my hair back as he cups my face. He kisses me hard as I lose all sense of direction.

He pulls away quickly. “I’ll find a way to get you,” he whispers quietly.

He shouldn’t have done that, not in front of his men or mine, but I know now that he feels the same way. That what we have isn’t just about sex or my ordeal. We have feelings for one another. I…I may even love him. I don’t know, I’ve never been in love before.

All the emotions swirling inside me don’t feel like anything I’ve ever experienced.

He’s drawn a line in the sand.

He turns to Dimitri. “Give my regards to Aleksi.”

Dimitri reaches for me as I take the dreaded steps toward him and turn to look at Marco.

A tear escapes my eye.

“I’m sorry, Marco, it’s for the best…” I don't mean a word of it, but they all still have their guns drawn. “I never meant for all of this trouble…”

“I’ll find you!” Marco calls. “I’ll find you, Katiya!”

Rocco looks like he’s about to shoot just for fun, Dante looks more dangerous than I ever imagined, and Angelo…well, he just looks plain mad.

Now Marco is going to have to explain to his family…

Dimitri shoves me behind him as if he’s afraid Marco will actually hurt me, and they start backing away as I fight against every feeling in my body about going with them.

I’m on the wrong side.

I’m a fucking traitor.

I never thought I would admit anything like that or have reason to ever think it, but it’s true.

With every fiber of my being, as Dimitri escorts me away muttering profanities under his breath, I know that I don’t belong here with them.

I belong there.

With Marco.

And I’ll find a way to get back to him.

MARCO

“Jesus fucking Christ.”Those are the first words out of Angelo’s mouth when they finally retreat.
