“What the fuck is her problem?”

“I don’t know, but she can’t be trusted.”

“She’s Russian,” Angelo says, like that explains it all.

“What will we do with her?”

“She can’t stay here, but I also can’t let her go just yet. We need to work out why the fuck nobody is asking around for her. I had a couple of my guys look into it and it’s business as usual. She’s supposed to be in Europe.”

“I suppose that explains why nobody is looking for her.”

“Maybe,” he concedes. “However, we don’t need her running off to tell daddy or her uncle anything until we call this meeting first. Then I can hand her over myself.”

“That’s awfully civil of you,” I say, hardly believing it. “I thought you’d go in there guns blazing, or better still, use her as a bargaining chip.”

He glances at me. “That doesn’t mean to say I won’t, but from what I hear, she doesn’t have a good relationship with her father. She gets along better with Aleksi.”

“How do you want to play this out then? Are we keeping her locked up?”

“If we don’t, she’ll try to escape. I can’t have that until we’re sure we have the Russians right where we want them. I still haven’t ruled out that they weren’t involved with Mia’s kidnapping to some degree. I know this shit didn’t get orchestrated and carried out by one person.”

“It also doesn’t explain why the smuggling shipment of people was still going ahead after we busted the Rombaldi’s and took them down. Clearly, there are more people involved than we initially thought, and it could be from more than one side. You know how scum like to stick together.”

“I’ve got Darko and his men on the case.”

Darko is our long-time head soldier. He carries out all the major operations of the foot soldiers, associates, and employees of the Medici empire, as well as personally escorting Angelo when Dom is indisposed. Like at the moment, Dom’s in the hospital with a gunshot wound. There’s never a dull moment where the Medicis are concerned.

“Angelo, you need to rest.” I can see how tired he is and how much this ordeal has taken its toll on him. The man is a machine.

“I can’t rest just yet, I need to talk to Ma. She’ll be devastated. That’s going to be a fun conversation.”

“When will you go back to Falmouth?”

Falmouth is Angelo’s secret hideaway house that nobody except his inner circle knows about. It’s secluded, secure, and right on the beach yet also nestled around trees and vast amounts of land. It’s where Angelo is most comfortable.

“Tomorrow. Rayne needs some personal time with Mia where they can relax and be safe away from the prying eyes of the media.”

Of course, he doesn’t mention that he needs a break. The man’s a workaholic, a lot like me.

“So Katiya stays here?”

“No.”

I frown. “What do you propose we do with her in the meantime?”

I don’t like the way he’s looking at me.

“An idea has just come to me.”

“Lord help us,” I mutter, knocking the rest of my drink back in one go. It burns the back of my throat in a good way.

“She’d be safer with you than anyone else.”

“Isn’t that what the soldiers are for? They can guard the door twenty-four seven.”

“Yes, they can.”

“It’s settled then.” I set my empty glass on the desk.
