Take that how you will.

He half-smiles then shakes his head as if he’s bemused. “I knew when you were born, you’d be the death of me,” he mutters, then turns to leave. “I can see my instincts were right.”

I watch him leave.

He may have done terrible things, but Aleksi is not a bad man. He’s only ever done what is best for me, and knowing that he will convince my father that I will not be marrying Vlad is a weight off my mind, along with not having to deal with him again.

I only hope he keeps his promise to not harm any of the others. He’s a hard man but also a man of principles. I don’t think he will kill Maxim and Dimitri for this. He wouldn’t go back on his word.

But I, of all people, know that when the darkness runs through your veins as it does with the Petrovs, there’s no telling what will happen next.

And that’s the part I hate the most.

I can only hope that he is distracted long enough with this emergency that I can get a message to Marco.

The fact that he came here…after everything. It tells me all I need to know and that what I’m feeling isn’t one-sided.

My heart blooms when really, I know that I have to lie low for a little while.

I’ll find my way back to you, Marco,I vow.Nothing will keep me away from you.

I meant what I said to Dimitri in the car, I’d rather be dead than be forced to marry a man I do not love or respect.

I’m strong-willed; I know I can get through this.

My uncle may think he taught me how to be tough and weather the storm, even when things get bad, but he also taught me to be tolerant and reminded me how much love I have in my heart.

That’s what will get me through. It has to, because my heart will shatter if I can’t be with Marco.

MARCO

I take Enzo with me.We arrive at 9514 Charles W Road swiftly.

It’s close to the Rowe Wharf, the Boston Pier, only a few minutes south. The wharf is surrounded by old buildings and up-and-coming galleries and restaurants. We plan on converting this old office space and warehouse into a two-story restaurant overlooking the water.

Once the casino has gotten past the first few hurdles that all new businesses have, I’ll put Fynn in charge and get the place off the ground. He’s always busy with the club, but he needs to spread his wings.

I like it here. It’s an eclectic mix of the old with the new.

I know what happens in these next few moments will open up a whole new can of worms that may just be the beginning of a much bigger war than we expected.

I run a hand over my face as we pull up at the lot right next to the office. I can see Rocco’s truck already parked.

I’ve no fucking clue what the hell to expect but I don’t like the feeling in my gut.

“Let’s do it,” I say to Enzo with a nod as we make haste over to the entrance. Time is of the essence here, and I’ve no idea what we’re about to stumble upon.

“I’ll try Angelo again once we know what’s going on here,” he replies.

I turn the handle and take a step inside.

Rocco is pacing; that’s not a good sign. He stops abruptly when he sees us.

The small amount of sun filtering into the musty room sheds some light on the situation, in more ways than one. A pretty blonde girl with large, rimmed glasses is sitting on a wooden chair with her hands tied behind her back and a bandana covering her mouth.

I look closer and can see Rocco's apprehension within the first few seconds.
