She bites her lip. “You weren’t the only ones looking for me, were you?” she dares to ask.

I motion for her to stand. “You’re a smart girl, I’m sure you’ve already figured that one out.”

She lets out a noisy breath of air. “We just have to make one stop,” she says, still flexing her wrists and shooting Rocco a glare. She stands surprisingly tiny in stature but curvy. She definitely reminds me of a librarian.

Rocco keeps guard, even though she’s absolutely no threat, he doesn’t back off.

I glance down at her as she straightens herself out, pushing her large black framed spectacles up her nose.

We’re all thinking the same thing - since when did she start calling the shots?

I think I like her bravery; she’ll go far if she’s going to agree to work for Fortress Security, as I am going to talk to Angelo about getting her on board with our IT department. She could be a valuable asset.

“We have to collect Charlie,” she goes on.

“Charlie?” Rocco huffs. “Who the fuck is …” He catches on pretty quick since she’s never shut up about this dog of hers.

“That’s your dog’s name?” I muse, no wonder she remembered Charlestown, and here we are on Charles Road. It’s kind of fitting.

“Yeah, after the river Charles, I’m a true Bostonian,” she tells us.

I literally slap my forehead, Enzo laughs, and Rocco urges her forward with his hand.

“Let’s get the fuck out of here,” he mutters.

I don’t wantto tell Angelo about our informant over the phone, no matter how secure these phone lines are meant to be. I’m starting to wonder about a lot of things.

This whole bug business that Sloane Summers was spouting back at the wharf has me thinking about a whole host of things. Namely, what is secure and can be hacked and what can’t.

So I give him the basics and tell him we will call him the minute we have Vladimir secured, and then he will meet us at the warehouse.

We’re going in for the kill with Vlad. I’ve so much more planned for him that he never knew would be coming.

He’s being watched as we speak. Then I plan to call Aleksi Petrov and deliver the good news.

I’m still trying to get a hold of Katiya, but I figure the first thing they did was take her phone from her. As soon as we have Vlad in our grasp, there will be no turning back on my quest to find her and sort this situation out once and for all.

“What are you thinking?” Enzo asks me after we’ve secured Sloane, the super brain, in the suite with her black Maltese-Shih Tzu.

We hit the road again with Rocco to track down this asshole and get him in the car without being noticed. The soldiers on foot have him in their sights as he enters his apartment alone.

“I’m thinking I need a stiff drink after all this,” I admit. “It was a big day yesterday, Mario’s funeral a few days ago, the whole Katiya situation, Sloane … and now Vladimir. What else could we pile on?”

“Never a dull moment,” he agrees.

This is how the business is, and I should be used to it by now. Today, however, I’m feeling it. Maybe it’s because of what happened with Katiya and me pounding at her gate, plus the fact that I hardly slept.

I want more than anything for this day to be over.

We ride in silence on the way over to Vlad’s place. I can’t wait to get hold of this greasy fucker and punish him for what he’s done. I’m reeling.

“Santino said his car is in the parking garage of his apartment,” Rocco says when he finishes talking on his earpiece. “I think it’ll be easier to jump him when he comes down. It’ll be nice and neat.”

“I say we barge in his apartment now. Why wait?” I’m anxious to get my hands on him and have been ever since Katiya told me she was betrothed to him.
