Everything I’ve told her tonight is superficial, there is nothing she will gain by eating dinner with me other than the fantastic food and whatever conversation we decide to strike up.

If she thinks I’m a fucking monster like her own bloodlines, then she’s barking up the wrong tree.

“Can I call Anastasia now?”

“Keep it short.” My temper appears again. “And put her on speaker phone.”

She rolls her eyes as I give her an eyebrow raise.

She takes the phone off the cradle and dials.

A few moments later, she says, “Ana, it’s Kat.”

She then proceeds to hold the phone away from her ear and winces, then she gives me a look that says, told you so.

“Kat! Fuck me, where have you been?” her friend yells down the phone.

“I lost my phone on the plane,” Katiya says, turning her back to me. “I haven’t been able to get a new one just yet,”

“Well, that’s pretty fucking convenient, I was about to send out a search party. It’s been almost a week. If it weren’t for your Instagram posts, I’d be calling the police.”

Interesting that she wouldn’t think to call Katiya’s father first.

She turns and mouths, ‘what the fuck?’It seems I forgot to tell her Vaughn hacked into her social media accounts already.

“I had my i-Pad,” I say. I hate lying to her like this, but for now it has to be done. “And you know what it’s like here. Italy is crazy. I’ve just been busy catching up with a few friends and trying to organize my classes, so I don’t miss anything when I get back.”

“Look, Kitty-Kat, I know that you needed some time out and I get that, because I’m your best friend, but running away from Vlad won’t solve the issue. You need to face it head-on.”

What the fuck?

Her back faces me again as she tries to get as far away from me as possible.

I pretend to work on my laptop, but my ears are practically burning.

I need to learn more about this miscreant and what he means to her. If she won’t tell me, then Vaughn will.

“I know that,” she whispers. “But it’s…it’s complicated.”

“Why are you whispering?” Ana says haughtily.

“I have a few people over. I just wanted to call and say that I’m fine and I’ll get a new phone soon, but I just need time.”

“Time away from him?”

“Away from everything.”

“I’m worried about you,” she says sternly. “And I don’t like what Vlad is doing.”

She starts to rub the side of her temple with one hand. “Can you text him, tell him I’m fine and that I lost my phone? I don’t need him on my back.”

“What about your father? I can call him for you.”

“Don’t bother, he doesn’t even know I’m out of the country.”

“Kat, I’m worried about you.”

She laughs. I may not know her well, but I know that’s a fake laugh.
