“Luring me with books?”

He smirks, “I think you were the one luring me last night, if I do recall.”

“Look … about that.” I don’t even know where to start, and I have been lying awake most of the night thinking about it.

He holds up his hands, “You don’t have to explain to me,princess, it is what it is.”

“That’s all you have to say, it is what it is?”

“I’m not saying it wasn’t good.” He folds his arms over his chest. “But as we said, this is an impossible situation being who we are.”

“It was a lapse in judgment on my part,” I tell him. “It won’t happen again, trust me.”

He studies me for a moment, but I can’t read him.

“You’re a beautiful woman, Katiya, but you’re under my protection. I can’t protect you … like that.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to,” I say haughtily. “I had two glasses of wine last night. I’m a lightweight so I lost control for a second. Anyway, you were sober, what’s your excuse for kissing me back?”

“I wanted to,” he says simply.

I swallow hard as I take him in.

Before he can say any more, he adds, “I have to go. I won’t be home for dinner so feel free to eat in your room if you wish.”

“Spoken like a true tyrant,” I call after him as the elevator pings open.

He glares at me for the few moments it takes for the doors to slide closed.

I don’t know what I was thinking.

Marco Medici may be God’s gift to women and an Adonis incarnate, but he is also pompous, rude, and arrogant.

And there is nothing else to say on the matter.

I’ll stay in my room until then.

Fuck him.

MARCO

I stay awayfrom Katiya Petrov for the next three days, breaking on day four because I can only take so much knowing she’s right down the hall from me.

The assault from the way she threw herself at me has not dulled my senses. I can’t stop thinking about it.

We had dinner again at the table, and she was fashionably late.

Long gone was the woman I saw that night we kissed.

Her vulnerability. Her acid tongue. Her ability to beguile me like I’m made of putty.

She let her guard down, but it didn’t last long. It’s back up again, in full force.

We don’t converse much, and when I let her know she can leave the table, she does so without a backward glance.

So we’re back to this.
