I get up quickly from the chair, giving Fynn a shove as I do.

“The car should be here any minute,” I reply.

I want to get her out into the hallway, away from their prying eyes and ears, but that would be wishful thinking with my brothers around. “You’ve got everything?”

She nods, quickly glancing at my brothers and Rocco, then slides her gaze back to me.

“Let’s wait in the foyer,” I say. Once we’re out of earshot, I add, “Look, Katiya, about before…”

“It’s fine, you don’t have to say anything,” she says. “Thank you for looking after me and letting me stay here. It’s a beautiful place. I won’t forget it. I won’t forget… you.”

My chest constricts again, and I feel a lump in my throat. Why is this so fucking hard?

I don’t even know her…

“I feel I need to explain,” I start.

She touches my cheek with her hand. “Don't, Marco. This is hard enough.” She leans towards my ear. “I’m glad it was you.”

And there it is. Somehow I can’t help but feel she threw her virginity at me, and I took it without even considering what it really means.

I close my mouth and gaze down at her. I fish into my pocket and pull out my wallet, and she glances down to see what I’m doing. I pull out my card. Lame, I know, but I want her to have my number.

“Call me, if you ever need anything.”

She nods, taking the card and sliding it into her pocket. Like clockwork, I see headlights outside as a car pulls up and my brothers and Rocco are upon us in a split second.

Darko and his guys are around the grounds, keeping watch.

“I’ll be seeing you,” she whispers.

I nod as we take one last look at each other, and she turns with her bags in hand. I walk ahead of her, one hand close to my holster. I lead her out to the waiting car.

When we get to the steps, Darko has already intercepted the driver and nods towards us to proceed.

“You’re going to be all right, Katiya, you’re a fighter,” I say as I help her down the steps, one hand resting on the small of her back.

I fucking hate seeing her go like this, but right now, we have no choice.

“I have to be, Marco.” She looks up at me as the minion he’s sent, Maxim, exits the car and opens the passenger door for her and waits. I see another figure in the backseat, Dimitri.

Rocco would have a field day with him given half a chance, and as I cast a quick glance over toward him, I see I’m not wrong.

No words are exchanged. It’s a quick and easy transaction as far as they are concerned.

We all know Petrov owes us big time for what we did. The time will come, of that I’m sure.

I want nothing for it personally; I just want her to be safe.

“Goodbye,” she says with a small smile before ducking into the car.

“Goodbye, Katiya.”

Maxim closes the door swiftly, nods towards us, and returns to the front passenger seat. And just like that, she’s gone.
