“Deadset, and if you don’t watch it, I’ll start using it more.” I laughed with him.

“We’re here, Mr. Hawthorne, no cameras in sight,” Gunner called back to us.

“You ready to go buy some new clothes?” Asher asked. “This will be stop number one.”

“Number one? I like the sounds of that. I think I need to get schmick like you.” I jabbed him in the ribs. “You’re getting new clothes today too.”

“Me? I don’t need new clothes,” he said, looking down at his playboy outfit. “Alright, maybe a few new clothes.”

Gunner opened the limo door and escorted us into the first store. Three women came over and immediately brought us to a lavish back room where we were offered drinks and asked what we’d like to look at first. I suggested everyday dresses and casual pant suits. Asher took a spot on a comfy looking sofa and began looking at emails.

“Hey, aren’t you going to even look at what they’re bringing in?” I asked. “You know what I’m supposed to wear for your status, so pay attention.”

“Imogen, wear whatever you want. And before you say it, it’s not because I don’t want to pick.” He stopped reading emails and looked at me. “You have a good eye, with exception to that horrid sweat suit. You get what you like.”

Over the next hour, I looked at and tried on outfit after outfit. At one point I told the women I’d like to just look around myself, so they followed me, pulling things from racks and bringing them to the dressing room. I’d run out of things to try on and had at least five dresses and four pant suits with jackets and shirts, but I had no idea which items Asher wanted to buy.

“Okay, that about does it here. Are we ready for store number two?” I asked, standing in front of him waiting for him to look up. “The next store better have men’s clothes or we’re not staying.”

“Sorry, I had to finish that email. Did you have them wrap up the outfits you picked?” Asher asked, standing to stretch.

“No, I was waiting for you to say which ones or how many to buy,” I said, feeling frustrated for no real reason.

“Again, I’m sorry. I should have told you that we are buying everything you need and everything you like.” He smiled and walked over to me. “Now, please, let me see that wonderful smile.”

Asher took my hand and we walked over to the store manager. He was clearly used to being waited on hand and foot, but I wasn’t.

“Please have all the outfits delivered to my penthouse by this afternoon. Halima will take care of the payment when you deliver,” he said, then we left the store.

Gunner was waiting on us at the curb, reading a newspaper, which I teased him about on the ride to the next store.

“Gunner, you are joining us in the next store. Both of you are getting new outfits,” I ordered. “I can’t be seen in public much longer with you two looking like pike.”

“Solitaire, I told you I don’t need new clothes, except maybe a black sweat suit for our walks,” Gunner said over the intercom.

“Don’t make me spit the dummy, Bond. You’re coming in to get clothes and definitely new scuffs,” I demanded. “You’re just having a whinge and I’m not listening.”

We came to a stop at the next store and Gunner and Asher followed behind, doing their best impressions of a sook. I ignored them and marched straight into the store, and announced we were there to change both of their wardrobes. It was my turn to wait as the women brought clothes over, and while they were trying on outfits, I went to look around for my own picks. Gunner and Asher had obviously conspired together while I was walking around, because when I came around the corner, they were standing back to back in the same exact outfits.

“Very funny you two, and just for that, we’re buying both of those outfits,” I said to them, pointing to the outfits for the woman helping to know to put them in the pile to buy. “Asher, will we need any clothes for warmer weather?”

“You never know,” he said, waggling his eyebrows. “Let’s go look at some shorts and maybe a bathing suit.”

“Bonza, I like that idea. Maybe we can go somewhere tropical for a honeymoon,” I said, following him into the clothing area. “Gunner, let’s go, you too.”

We spent the next few hours going store to store shopping. I knew the shops looked exy but I had no idea how much was actually being spent.

“You made me feel like Vivian fromPretty Womantoday.” I gave him a quick kiss on the lips. “Thank you, it was really fun being with you. Do you have to go to work?” I asked, climbing into the limo.

“I do have to work this afternoon, but how about I take you out to a nice dinner tonight in one of those new dresses?” He smiled at me so sweetly. “I have something we need to talk about.”

“Bond, take us by the Notre Dame Cathedral. I was Googling it and would love to see it,” I said, climbing into the limo. “Oh wait. Asher, do we have time?”

Chapter 54

AUGUST

Ihated the look on her face when I said we needed to talk. I never wanted to see her hurt or sad again, not since that day in the elevator.
