“You’re in a mood, Trey. That was joking.” Mom chuckled into the phone. “Parker might be rubbing off on you, in a bad way.”

“That will never happen,” I chuckled back, “but thanks for the laugh.”

“Trey, what’s this all about?” Mom asked. “Is it cold feet or a certain someone?”

“No, no one in particular.” I lied. “I’m just working a lot lately and started wondering if that would be fair to a new bride, to be gone all the time.”

“Nice try, Son. You don’t work that much and, in case you forgot, you’re a Hawthorne. You don’t have to work at all,” Mom stated. “You could take a month off to help your new bride get acquainted. Maybe take a honeymoon.”

“I can’t take a month off, I have patients that count on me,” I said.

“Can’t, Trey, or won’t?” Mom asked sternly. “You can have another doctor take on your patients and keep up on them remotely.”

“I guess you’re right. I don’t know what’s bothering me,” I conceded. “I gotta run, Asher is calling and he never calls.”

“Call me later and we can talk more, or just go see her again,” Mom said. “And don’t pretend you don’t know who.”

I hung up with my mother and took the incoming call from Asher.

“Hey Ash, what’s up?” I stopped the pacing I’d been doing.

“Nothing really, just wanted to see if you were still going through with this mail-order bride thing?” Asher yawned into the phone. “Sorry about that, late night.”

“It must be exhausting being you,” I chirped. “Let me guess, Sawyer is somewhere right next to you passed out as well?”

Yeah. Well, I mean no, but we are on his Island. You gotta come out here sometime.” Asher sounded more awake. “We collaborated on a design for his new house here. I think you’d like it. I’m pretty pleased.”

“Don’t you ever get tired of partying?” I interrupted. “I got bored with it. But did I really?”

“Dude, Mia was right. She said you seemed confused about this wedding thing.” Asher went on talking. “I thought I’d call and see if I could help.”

“Okay, so help. What’s your advice?” I asked. “Don’t get married and come party?”

“Actually, I think you are ready to get married, plus you’re old now,” Asher laughed.

“I’m only old because you’re still a baby,” I joked back. “Speaking of which…”

“Mia told me when she called earlier. She’s concerned about it spoiling your wedding bliss,” Asher teased. “All joking aside man, I think you should do it.”

“Really? Surprising coming from you,” I said. “Why?”

“Because I watched you at the charity ball hiding from all the lovely women, then you snuck off with Mia’s sister,” Asher said. “So if you’re okay with hanging with a common woman all night with all the others available, you must be ready.”

“You do have a way with words, Ash,” I laughed. “You know if I go through with this, then you’re next.”

“Not me, I may have to stay on the island forever and bring the fun to me so Mom doesn’t get mad.” Asher laughed out loud. “Ha, that’s not a bad idea I just had.”

“You’d get bored on one island forever and we all know it,” I said. “You gonna be in town anytime soon, like for my wedding?”

“Shoot, you’re going to the courthouse. I’m not leaving this white sand for that,” Asher scoffed. “Have someone send me a video.”

“You are seriously too much,” I said. “I gotta go, but thanks for the talk.”

“Hey Trey, go see the chick and her daughter before they leave. You know, just to make sure,” Asher said, then hung up.
