“What’s settled?” I urged.
“Parker was just asking me to go overnight with him for a cardiology convention. He’s a keynote speaker and really wants me to join him to meet some of his colleagues.”
“Sounds good. You should go with him. When is it?” I turned out of Mia’s hug to pour myself a coffee then turned to Parker, holding the coffee pot to his cup. “Parker, want a refill of your coffee?”
Parker smiled and put his hand over his cup, never looking up from the file he was reading. “Excuse me, ladies. I have to get going. Mia, if you decide to go, I’ll pick you up at five-thirty.” Parker kissed his Mia and stepped into the elevator.
“Oh, you meant overnight like this night?” I slid onto a bar stool next to Mia and dipped a spoon into her oatmeal. “You don’t need to look like something horrible is happening. We’ll be fine one night alone. You do remember we live alone far, far away in Australia, right?”
“Don’t remind me. I’m dreading you leaving. I missed you guys so much.” Mia twisted her hair between her fingers “Why don’t you stay here in New York?”
“You know I have to go back. It’s where our family house is, where Mom and Dad lived before they died,” I said. “It’s home.”
“That’s true, but we don’t have to sell the house. We could keep it and go back once in a while or rent it out,” Mia said with mounting excitement at her newfound idea. “Look at how much Sophie likes Victoria, and the whole family loves Sophie.”
“I hear you, but that’s a huge decision,” I said. “In the meantime, we have a little girl to bring to the zoo.”
“Exactly why I can’t go with Parker. I have a zoo to go to.” Mia waved her spoon in the air. “We should go soon before it gets too hot and the animals won’t be out.”
“You are going to go pack to travel with your husband, and while you’re away, why don’t you make a grandbaby for real for Victoria.” I walked away, laughing. “As soon as you pack, then we can leave for the zoo.”
“Don’t ignore my idea,” Mia followed me. “Let’s at least talk about it.”
“I’m going to see if Sophie still wants to go to the zoo, and you’re going to go pack a sexy red dress to seduce your sexy husband,” I called out. “We can talk about it later. I’m not leaving for another two weeks. Let’s see if you get tired of us underfoot all the time.”
“Nice try, Chloe, but you would get your own place.” Mia passed my room, heading to her own and reemerging toothbrush in hand.
“Hi, Aunt Mia.” Sophie stretched and yawned.
“Hey, sweet pea. I see you finally woke up. Come give Aunt Mia all of your hugs.”
Sophie jumped into Mia’s outstretched arms, then Mia turned to walk away with her, but turned one last time to stick her tongue out at me.
Laughing, I shouted, “real mature, Mia.”
Seconds later, Mia strolled back by my room. “Why, whatever do you mean?” She flipped her hair then kept going to the kitchen with Sophie still clinging to her.
The elevator rang throughout the penthouse letting us know someone was on the way up. Mia sat Sophie down in a stool and went to look at the camera to see who was in the elevator.
“Who is it?” Sophie called out.
“Hey there. You playing hooky from work?” Mia said over the intercom into the elevator.
Chapter 55
Trey
I’d been at the hospital through the night with the triplets. Their vitals had begun to hold steady, so I decided to go home and grab a shower and a quick nap before going back to check on my patients. I grabbed the hospital phone and dialed the children’s floor.
“Betty, I’m leaving for a few hours. Is there anything going on that needs my attention right away?”
“Everyone is fine. I heard from the girls that you were here all night, young man,” Betty said. “I’ll call you if we need anything. Go get something healthy to eat and take a nap.”
“Yes ma’am. I’m on my way out right now. See you this afternoon.” I put the phone back on the hook.
My driver was waiting, as expected. I climbed in, laid my head back, then opened the window between me and the driver.
“I’m going to shower and nap for an hour or two. So, I need you back here, let’s say, in three hours.”
