“Mia, I know you’re still thinking about it, but I want you to just go on your trip and don’t think about it.”

“Don’t think about what?” Trey asked from behind me.

How did he get behind me? Geez, I thought he was in the kitchen. I misread this one.

I closed my eyes and quickly dropped my arms, hoping desperately that my underwear hadn’t been showing while my robe was hiked up. I could feel him looking at me, and I knew without turning around.

“Good morning, Dr. Trey. I see you already have your patient under your spell.” I dodged the dancing pair. “Good on ya’, Sophie.”

“Mummy, Dr. Trey said I’m almost better,” Sophie said, bouncing on the couch Trey had landed them both on. “Can I have my brekkie now?”

“Yes, ma’am, hop on over to the counter, and I’ll get your moo juice.” I tried my best to not fix my hair or check my smudged eye makeup I’d been too tired to take off last night. “Dr. Trey, did you eat breakfast this morning?”

“I kind of had a little bit of this and a little of that all morning.” Trey stood from the couch. “These yellow flowers are for you, Miss Chloe, and these red ones are for you, Mia.”

“What did you do wrong that you came bearing gifts?” Our hands touched as I took the flowers. “They’re beautiful.”

“Miss Sophie, do you like your balloons?” Trey carried Sophie to the counter. “Chloe, do I have to have a reason?”

“I don’t suppose you do,” I replied.

“So back to my question. Don’t think about what?” Trey looked from me to Mia, smiling. “Spill it.”

“You’re so nosey.” Mia swatted at his arm. “Parker wants me to go with him overnight.”

“Oh right, I just saw him in the lobby. He mentioned it.” Trey sat in one of the stools. “So, are you going?”

“No, my sister is only here for a while and I’m not leaving her.” Mia placed a glass of orange juice in front of Trey.

“How long is ‘a while’?” Trey asked.

“I’m here for another two weeks,” I answered for Mia. “I told her to just go. She’ll be back by mid-morning.”

“I’m going to get dressed for the zoo. Come on, Sophie, I’ll help you get dressed too.” Mia piggy-backed Sophie from the room.

“I agree with you, she should go with Parker. It would be good for him.” Trey finished his juice. “I’d love to spend the evening with you while she’s gone. Listen, we need to talk.” Trey looked around to see if Mia was coming back.

“I know what you want to talk about, Trey, and it’s not going to happen.” I walked over by the couch, pacing a bit.

“Okay, tell me what it is I want to talk to you about.” Trey walked over to stand a few feet from me.

“Me staying here,” I said. “I can see on your face that you want to say something about the attraction between us, but understand I know that your mom has bought you a mail-order bride, and on top of that, I do have to leave.”

Chapter 57

Trey

“Ido have to leave,” Chloe said.

I ran a hand over my face. Delaying and anxiously needing a second to regroup, I leaned against the couch.

“Let me at least say what I wanted to say.” I stood and stepped closer, then lost my train of thought when the tie on her robe loosened enough to expose bare skin. I wanted to tell her I found her refreshing and funny and more, but the words wouldn’t come out.

“Trey, did you want to say something?” Chloe asked.

Sensing she felt uncomfortable, I took a step back and smiled. “It can wait. I know you’re getting ready for the zoo.”

She tugged at the robe belt around her waist and half grinned. “If you’re sure.”
