“I appreciate everything you’ve done for Sophie and myself, but if you keep spoiling her, I’m never going to survive her when we get back home,” I said. I felt him turn and stare at me.

“I really mean it. Thank you for making her feel so special. It’ll be difficult to return home to no family.” I gazed off in the distance. “Besides her being sick, we’ve had a great time here with the whole Hawthorne family.”

Trey smiled and shook his head, his green eyes almost sparkling in the sun. “Hey, let’s not get serious now. Your trip is far from over, and I want to make sure it’s the best. Why don’t we go get some dinner?”

“We want to make you the best dinner in town,” I said. “I told you we had a surprise. Plus, we need to get home to Amoeba.”

“Ah, finally we are getting to the curious text,” Trey said. “Lead on, ladies. I can’t wait.”

Chapter 59

Trey

It had been a long day for Sophie, just coming off of being sick, but she really wanted to show Trey how to make rolled sausages. It was her favorite dinner. Sophie had obviously done this with Chloe before. She knew exactly how to roll the sausage in the dough strips. She even knew how to sprinkle the seasoning on the top. Chloe wanted me to taste something they liked from Down Under, so why not her favorite dish and favorite dessert, Pavlova?

“I forgot to ask if you had any food allergies.” Chloe placed the strawberry- and raspberry-covered dessert on the table in front of me. “We have ice cream if you’d rather.”

“Nice try, not sharing that dessert,” I teased, snatching a strawberry from the top. “Sophie, are you going to have this dessert too?”

“No, I don’t want any Pavlova tonight. My tummy got full from the sausages.” Sophie crawled onto the couch with seal, bunny, and bear.

Amoeba immediately felt left out and ran circles around the couch until Chloe lifted her up next to Sophie.

Sophie passed out within minutes of her head hitting the pillow on the couch. I gestured for us to take our dessert and wine out on the balcony. It was a nice spring night with a light breeze.

“Parker says you still haven’t gone on your date with Auction Girl,” Chloe said. “You know the one with the big um…personality?”

I wiped my mouth with a napkin. “It’s a little complicated. We’re both busy, but we’ve decided on this Saturday night.”

“How big of a night do you have planned for all the money she paid?” Chloe asked, not wanting to look at his face because she didn’t want to see him excited about the date.

“Big enough,” Trey said.

Chloe raised an eyebrow. “Big enough that I’ll be reading about it in the tabloids on Sunday?”

“Possibly.” I could picture the face she was making without looking at her. I sighed.

“You mean probably and in a big way,” Chloe laughed.

“Yeah, probably. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get away from it. Plus, she loves the spotlight, so she’ll have told them where we’ll be every minute of the night.”

“She seemed like someone who would love the spotlight,” Chloe said thoughtfully. “I don’t mean to judge her without knowing her, but if it quacks like a duck then it must be a duck.”

I took a bite of my Pavlova and chewed slowly. After I swallowed, I saw that she seemed to be watching me with amusement.

“What’s going on in that head over there?” I asked.

“I was just thinking. You never know, you might just fall in love with her on your big date,” Chloe smirked.

“No, that’s not going to happen. If I didn’t fall in love with her before, it won’t happen now.” I shook my head no. “I don’t even like her anymore as a person.”

“So, you had a bad break up. I guess it was all over the tabloids too,” Chloe said. “Other than the charity ball, have you had to be at events with her since the break-up?”

“Yes, there were a few events a while back. There was some friction whenever we were at the same event, but we’re fine now.” I shrugged. “I mean, she still follows me around and tries to dance with me and stuff, but I run and hide or make a friend dance with me.”

Chloe was trying hard at fighting back a grin while staring out over the park.

“What’s with the goofy grin over there?” I asked. “You do know I can see you?”
