“What do you want to know?” She turned to look at me. “Ask away.”

“I don’t know. The little things. Like what’s your favorite color? Or, what’s your favorite candy?”

“Purple and Hershey bars.” She leaned on one elbow facing me. “My turn. What’s your favorite sea creature?”

“Now, that’s an easy one. I thought you were going to ask my favorite movie or favorite sport.” I laid out flat. “Sea creature? Ursula.”

Neither of us said anything, then we both started laughing at the same time. We woke early the next morning still laying on the bow, but with her head on my shoulder.

Now, this I could do every night.

If I had to pick my favorite time from all the activities, it was that night laying on the bow, talking and looking at the stars. The yacht horn blowing going into port startled her and she sat up.

“We fell asleep? And we’re here.” Jade jumped up. “I’m not dressed to go into the city. Where is my luggage?”

“Jade, don’t worry about it. Marcus will serve breakfast, then the chaos of the Hawthorne women and primping will begin. You have plenty of time to get changed.”

“Sorry, I just don’t want to let Victoria down by showing up all wind-blown. Other than that, I don’t care what people think.” She put her hand out to me. “Come on, I’ll help you up.”

“Thanks and, Jade, I had a great time out here with you last night.” I took her hand. “Big night tonight.”

“It sure is a big night.” Sarah rushed out onto the deck, oblivious to the moment Jade and I were having. She went on and on while I watched Jade walk away. “Look at this city. I can’t wait to be pampered. Will we have time to get everything done before the party? Because I need hair and makeup, and nails, of course. Then there’s a gown and shoes. Sawyer, will you escort both of us in as your dates?”

“Sarah, I’m glad you asked.” I motioned for her sit. “Neither of you will go in as my date. I’m known as a playboy, but even I don’t show up to charity events with two dates.”

“Darn, I wanted to have my picture in the tabloids with you.” She pouted. “Well, I guess I understand. There will be plenty of time for that after we get married.”

“Yes, there will,” I answered absently. “What?”

Chapter 95

Jade

Sawyer hadn’t been wrong. An hour after breakfast, the limos started pulling up to the dock. The first limo was Victoria and a young, beautiful brunette girl dressed as perfectly as Victoria.

I certainly hope that’s her daughter and not another bride.

“Don’t let them intimidate you. Just be yourself and they will like you,” Gunner said next to me. “They’re regular people just like you and, with the exception of Murphy, they were all brides from the agency, hand-picked by Victoria.”

“Thanks, Gunner. Will you be with me today?”

“I’ll be with Imogen and you.” Gunner pointed to a tall redhead getting out of the third limo. “I think she’ll be your best friend in no time.”

“Is that the girl you that you helped to rescue?” I nudged him. “Lou told me about it.”

“Yeah, that’s Solitaire.” Gunner pointed to a very pregnant girl getting out of the last limo. “That right there is Poppy. She is the original bride that started this family down this path.”

“She looks ready to pop,” I laughed. “What is she doing here?”

“That’s Kellan’s wife. I’m sure by now you know Kellan is Sawyer’s older brother.” Gunner waved. “She wanted to be here to greet you and help you today.”

“Now I’m looking forward to this day, but not to the hair and nail stuff. I may need oxygen to get through that.”

Victoria greeted us as we exited the yacht. She sent me to the limo with Poppy and Imogen and, of course, Gunner, while Sarah went with two women named Mia and Chloe. I figured I’d get to know more about them later.

Sitting in the limo with these women, it was hard to imagine them like me until they started talking, and I relaxed right away.

“When is your baby due?” I asked Poppy. “Victoria is so excited to have her first grandbaby.”
