I did not realize there would be so many people. There might be more than at a regular show.

“Hey, you’re going to be great,” Cota said from behind me. “And after you kill it out there, we’ll have a fun night at the party.”

“Thank you. I am excited to dress up for fun and be, how do you say, silly.”

The music started. I looked across stage to Matt waiting to meet me in the middle. Cota hugged me, wished me luck, then went out front to see the performance. It was frustrating to me that I was so nervous. I’d been doing this for more than fifteen years, but tonight felt different. Tonight it was for family, and family is something I never really truly had. The lights dimmed just enough, the curtain went up, and muscle memory took over. The next thing I knew we were taking a bow with a standing ovation. It was then that I saw Yury’s men in the back watching me.

Oh, no. Not now. I don’t want to leave yet. Where are Bond and Charlie?

Cota must have noticed something was wrong. He immediately turned to see where I was looking. I saw him talk into his cell and, out of nowhere, Bond and Charlie were escorting the two men out. The curtain went down, and I felt like I could breathe for the first time in days.

‘Sabrina, I have seen you dance before, but tonight was the best one of all.” Aunt Victoria came backstage. “Now, I saw the men. We all saw the men. But I assure you they are gone. Bond and Charlie are very capable.”

“Alright everyone, leave my wife to get her Halloween costume on so we can win Best Costume.” Cota took my hand, pulling me away.

Thirty minutes later, the party was in full swing and the new connecting building they were using had been decorated above and beyond. We walked around, trying out all of the scary things, until Aunt Victoria took the stage.

“Not a lot of people know that we are married. Can’t I just watch this time?”

“No way, you are my wife and a Hawthorne, so you have to play. Besides, it’s loads of fun. The crowd usually gets a big kick out of it.” He threw his arm over my shoulder.

“I don’t know how to play these games, though. We were not allowed. People will laugh at me.”

“Not to worry, because the twins are always making a scene in some way.” He pointed to the other side of the room to his cousins. “There they are now; let’s go join them.”

“Please stay next to me.”

There are so many people here. I can’t do this.

ChapterSixty-Six

COTA

“August, where is that adorable daughter of yours?” I asked as we approached. “Where is your costume?”

“Are you sure I’m August?” he shrugged. “I’m not sure.”

I looked from one to the other, trying to see which was which. They were always so identical and tonight was no exception. I saw Murphy watching us, so I waved her over.

“What’s going on over here, boys?”

“Hey, brat,” one of them said to her.

“Mom is going to be mad at you two for not dressing up.”

“Are you sure we’re not?” they both said.

“I have a devil tail and horns, even fallen angel wings.”

“I have this sweet halo and light up angel wings.” He turned the wing lights on.

“The question is, which one of us is which?”

“Asher is the devil,” Murphy chuckled. “That’s an easy one.”

“Alright, I have to say this is genius. I believe they are dressed up as each other.” I stepped closer to the devil twin.

“Maybe we are, maybe we aren’t,” the devil grinned.
