“You don’t know what you’re missing over here.” He popped a cookie in his mouth.

ChapterFifty-Three

SABRINA

Iwas on the balcony doing yoga when I saw Kellan come out of his room and flip on the coffee machine. He waved, then went about his business preparing his breakfast. Moments later, I saw Cota drag him into the kitchen. They had a few words, which I couldn’t hear, then turned and gave me another wave. I sent Murphy a text.

“I made a mistake shopping yesterday. I need a gown to recreate “Pretty Woman.”

“Tonight”I followed up.

“Like the red gown?”

“Yes. He wants to take me out on the town tonight.”

“Yay, that’ll be fun.”

“I am excited. I want to look just like the movie.”I answered.

“Fun, fun, fun! See you in a bit.”

I sat on the balcony for an hour, enjoying the weather. The cell phone laid on the table begging me to use it. I wanted to contact my parents, but so many thoughts ran through my head. Would they want to hear from me? Would they tell Yury where I was? Would they be happy for me? I thought if I just called I’d at least know where their thoughts were. It didn’t matter that they cared so little that they sent me away and never visited. They were still my parents. I still wanted their approval. I stood and paced with the cell still calling out to me until I swooped it up and dialed.

“Hello Mother, I mean ??????????, ????,” I blurted out.

“??? ?? ??? ? ??????” She growled into the phone in Russian.

“I speak English now, Mother. And why is your first question to me ‘what is wrong with you’?” I demanded. “Never mind, I got the answer I was looking for. I will not call you again.”

I disconnected the call and tossed the cell on the balcony couch. Tears poured down my face. I swiped at them until there were so many that I just gave into it. I cried harder than I had since I first went to the compound.

How foolish of me to think she would care about me or wonder if I was okay.

The tears wouldn’t stop coming. I had to have lost track of time after I’d laid back on the couch, emotionally spent. I heard the elevator buzzer letting me know someone was trying to arrive. I looked down to the cell to find it had been over an hour. I also saw many text messages from Murphy saying she would be over soon.

Oh, my God! I can’t let her see me like this.

I sent her a text that I’d fallen back asleep and that I needed ten minutes to get ready.

“Alright, I’ll meet you in the car. I need to make a call anyways.”

“Sorry, I will hurry.”

“No worries. Are the matching GI Joe’s going with us?”

“I think you mean Bond and Charlie, so yes.”

My hair was already pulled back as always. I grabbed a cute pair of red pants, a thin long-sleeve t-shirt, and flats. A quick look in the mirror revealed what I’d hoped wouldn’t show. My eyes were swollen from crying. I ran back into the bathroom, scrambling in my bag to find my new mascara and eyeliner.

I hope this works. I can just wear sunglasses. That should work, Murphy wears them all the time.

Five minutes later, I was walking up to the car door. I adjusted the sunglasses Murphy had convinced me to buy the day before, then climbed in.

“Where are we going first?” I asked as cheerfully as possible. “I need a long red dress.”

“And white gloves. How fun,” Murphy added. “Did he say where you were going?”

“No, he just said out on the town. Maybe I shouldn’t get a long gown.” I looked out the window. “I should not think it will be like in the movie.”
