We drive back into town and I send a quick update to Connor. I’m not surprised that Charlie’s not involved. He was a good guy when he was still working for us. Plus, he seems too shy, too introverted. What is it with all these timid guys working for The Business? Perhaps it’s time to change our type of security guards. I let that thought linger in my mind for a moment, enjoying the pleasant buzz of the others talking around me. My phone vibrates and I expect it to be Con, but it’s not. It’s Big.

Big: Chicks are going crazy

Big: sent a picture

I narrow my gaze as I open the snapshot. Four women dancing on a bar. My eyes are almost immediately glued to Angélique, while I zoom in to get a better look at her. She’s smiling to her friends, unaware that someone captured the image. Damn, thoseeyes. Thatinnocence. The tight, black pair of pants that hug her curvy frame and the dark green velvet blouse that complements the sweetness of her skin tone. I fucking crave for her touch. She’s got me horny as hell with just one picture.

I want her.

“Boss?”

“What?” I snap, catching Ella’s surprised gaze. “Did you hear me?” She asks. My face probably gives me away, because she repeats, “I was asking if you wanted to check out the new girls we’ll be seeing later on in The Whisper?”

“New girls?” I clench my jaw. Fuck, I had completely forgotten about them. Fresh meat, straight from some Eastern European country. I should know this; Dad mentioned it during the meeting.

“Yeah, they’re arriving…” she checks her phone, but it’s Mason who mumbles the reply.

“Fifteen minutes. They’ve just got to the house and will be dropped off at The Whisper in a bit.”

Ella smiles. “You heard the man. You want to go to the club now?”

“Uhm…” my phone vibrates again.

Big: Flash, West Village

“Yeah. No. Let them check in and stay at the house for tonight. Tell the boys to bring them over for tomorrow evening. You guys can deal with them then. We’ll go for a drink instead.” The car goes silent.

“A drink?” Ella asks, eyebrows furrowed. “Together? Withyou?”

I google Flash, West Village. I’ve never heard of the place. “Why not? I’m a nice guy, wouldn’t you agree?”

“I suppose.” Her voice goes up at the end.

“Good. Ruby, let’s head for Flash, in West Village. Ever heard of it?” Silence. “Anyone?”

“Nope,” Ella says, popping the p.

“You’re no fun, fuckers.”

Although, fifteen minutes later, the entire crew eyes the bar with a baffled look on their faces. It nearly makes me grin.Nearly.

Above the darkened window is “Karaoke Bar” marked in huge, flickering bright blue lights. I let out a huff.

“Is this the place?” Mason scratches the back of his neck and this time I do grin.

What the fuck am I doing here?

From the inside, the place looks exactly like it does from the outside. Hopeless. Luckily, we find a relatively quiet spot in the far corner, away from the crowd.

“Samuel, find Big. He’s somewhere inside this dump.” If anyone’s surprised about that, or about the fact that we’re here instead of at The Whisper, they don’t show it.

Ella hands me a drink and takes a sip from her own. “I believe this is the first time that you have taken us out for a drink. Is it a special occasion?”

“Nah. Just felt like it.”Lie.

We stand there for an awkward moment, before she mumbles, “Oh, I know what this is about,” she murmurs, then points toward the stage. “Thisis why we’re here.” I want to scold her, but then I freeze.

Because I see her, Angélique, and a sudden rush of adrenaline runs through my body. I cannot shake it off, it’s addictive. She’ssomehow addictive.
