“Shall I ask if Candy’s available?”

“Nah. You stay put and have a drink with the guys. Ella’s looking after the girls and we’ll wait here for my parents for further news.”

I walk over to the pool table and keep my hands casually in the pockets of my black slacks. I halt right beside her and give her two seconds to look up in surprise. The moment she notices me, she freezes, eyes wide and her lips slightly parted. My body hardens immediately at the thought of all the dirty things I want to do to her. I mumble, “Hi baby, welcome to the lion’s den.“

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

SUNDAY EVENING – ANGÉLIQUE

“What are you doing here?” It’s supposed to come out all snarky and with attitude, butdamn, he’s caught me off guard. Which is theonlyreason my tongue feels like leather in my mouth. It has absolutelynothingto do with the way his navy-blue button down makes his long, toned body look so very sexy.

He chuckles and the low, menacing sound tickles my spine. “What amIdoing here? This is my second home, angel, our business. The question is, what areyoudoing here?”

At that very moment, Wyatt comes to stand by us and my gaze finds his in a silent plea. Maybe I shouldn’t be silent, since he’s the one who brought me here after having picked me up from the hotel earlier tonight. We ended up sharing the journey in silence, so I have obtained an embarrassingly little to no amount of information as to why or how I ended up being in the situation I am in today. I wrote Father a message to confirm my longer stay, and he replied with a thumbs up.

“Logan—” Wyatt grumbles and gives me an apologetic smile.

“Logan?” I hear myself ask, practicing the sound on my lips. So Sexgod has a name after all. I like it, nothing like I’ve ever heard before. His presence is thick, dominant, and I inhale the dangerous spice that lingers around him. The blueness in his eyes really is impressive. They’re so bright, it reminds me of a sunny day at the lake in Vienne. Flawlessly brilliant. He catches my stare and his lips curl into a wicked smile. Still, I can’t get myself to look away. I don’t want to. I’ve always run away from all the things I wanted. Today’s the day that I will keep my stance; I won’t retreat. I couldn’t, even if I wanted to. It’s like his stare lands over mine, wrapped into an invisible, yet loving squeeze. I don’t know how long we stand there, but when someone coughs, we both snap out of it. I’m the first one to avert my eyes and look at the man who’s approached us. He’s wearing an expensive looking suit and a wary look and there’s something unsettling about his demeanor that I can’t place. When he catches Logan’s eyes, he gives him an exuberant smile.

“Logan, how are you doing?”

I watch as Logan hardly hides his irritation when he spews, “Carter, what an unexpected surprise.” Logan turns to face me and leans over, invading my personal space. I breathe in his musk as his fingertips burn my skin. He touches the back of my head as his mouth finds my ear. “What d’you reckon? I say he could be my next victim.” He pulls back and bares his teeth, while his eyes send me a silent challenge.

True or false?

My gaze darts to the smaller, slender man and back to Logan. I stand on my tiptoes and it’s my turn to pull his nape toward me, relishing in the heat of his presence so close to me. “I say you’re full of shit,” I whisper. “False.” Then I withdraw, drinking in his devilish smile. Logan turns to Wyatt. “I’ll be right back. Stay with her, don’t fucking move.”

I watch both men walk toward the pool table, shaking hands with two other suits. When I’m positive he’s out of earshot, I ask Wyatt. “So, Big and Logan, right?”

Wyatt, orBig, shrugs. “Yeah. Although my real name’s Wyatt, as you know. He is Logan Donnelly. Heir to Donnelly Holding Corp. Their family owns about fifty of these clubs around the country, and they’re still growing.” Wyatt hands me a glass of white wine and pops out two bar stools.

While considering this new piece of information, I scout my surroundings in a different way. The Whisper looks…classical. It has a huge bar, a sitting corner with tables and chairs that offer the best view to the stage on which a woman is showing off her curves. Her dark brown skin shines like oil as she twists around the pole like a snake.

“He told me that he’s the heir to a large, criminal organization?” So he lied. Why am I not surprised? Probably the same reason I’d welcomed the touch that had followed.

I want him. All of him.

“By day, a lawyer,” Big grabs a beer mat and holds it in front of us. “By evening, a boss.” He spins the beer mat and we both watch it spiral. “By night, a leader.” The beer mat tumbles flat onto the bar. “Boom,” Big whispers, making me shiver. I process his words. So, he wasn’t lying. “Of what?” I try.

“I can’t tell you that and you know it.”

I spin the glass in my hand and watch the golden liquid. “Why did you chain me up in his apartment?”

“Because my employer’s looking for someone like you.”

My eyes dart to the dancer and I take a sip of my wine. “To do that?” I point my head toward the stage and Big lets out a laugh. “No.” Then he moves ever so slightly forward, making the movement intimate without it being sexual. “I can’t reveal more, I’m afraid. I’m sure that she’ll fill in the blanks.”

She? Now that’s a surprise. I look over at where Logan’s casually leaning against the pool table while he’s talking to the guys. It’s strange to see him like that, like an actualman. Not some predator who hunts for prey. He’s gorgeous, with his slightly longer locks of hair, dark as the night.

“There’s something going on between the two of you,” Big states dryly and in the corner of my eye I can feel his stare. I keep my focus on Logan, but my lips curl into the smallest of smiles.

I’m no longer tied up or cornered in my bed. No, tonight I’m free, yet still captivated by the aura of danger and heat that surrounds Logan. Only this time I get to come and go as I please. I’m in control if I want to be. And that’s a huge turn-on.

As if he feels me staring, Logan turns his face and our eyes meet. We lock eyes for a moment, before I turn back to Big, ignoring his previous statement.

“So, he wasn’t born in California then?”

Big barks out a laugh. “Is that what he told you? Gosh, he’s such a pain in the ass. Nah, born and raised in New York.”
