“It’s Kate.”

“Kate? Sorry, I don’t think I know anyone called Kate.”

“Oh, sorry, I must have got the wrong number.”

A burst of laughter crackled down the line. “It’s me, you idiot. I was just making the point you’ve not been in touch for forever.”

“Sorry,” said Kate. “Every time I try and call your phone is off.”

“That’s Sylvia that is. Do you know she now confiscates our phones at the start of each shift? The sooner I can get out of there the better.”

“I didn’t think it could be any worse. Sounds like I got out at the right time.”

“Yeah, you lucky cow. Anyway, how’s life in sunny Cornwall?”

“Um, not sunny. It rains more than Bath.”

“Oh. I was planning on coming for a visit next month but I might head to Spain instead.”

“Noooo, come, come, I’d love to see you. I didn’t think you had any holiday left?”

“I don’t, but I’m so close to walking out of that dump I may be on a permanent holiday soon.”

“Well you’re welcome any time.”

“Cheers, mate. Look, I’m sorry but I’ve got to go. I’m waitressing tonight and if I’m late Sylvia will dock some of my wages.”

“OK, speak soon. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

Kate hung up and wished she’d been a better friend to Flo. Flo worked so many shifts it was hard to pin her down, and eventually it became easier not to bother. Kate grabbed the piece of paper she’s been writing on earlier and added another resolution-spend more time with Flo.Above Kate’s head the floorboards creaked as her guests moved around. Kate sighed, climbed under her duvet and switched on the laptop.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

KEVIN AND JASONcrept down the stairs, Kevin cursing under his breath as his gun bag knocked against the wall. The door to the kitchen creaked and they stood still, listening for any signs they’d woken their host. Jason gave a nod and they entered the kitchen, closing the door behind them. Kevin set about making a flask of coffee while Jason boiled eggs.

“You have remembered lunch is provided?” whispered Jason.

“Yeah, mate, of course, but it’s so bloody hilly we might need a bit extra.”

“Fair point.”

“Right, pack these into your bag and let’s get going.”

The two men crept out of the house, clicking the front door behind them as quietly as they could.

“That was a nice place,” said Jason relieved to be in the car and able to talk at a normal volume.

“I think we freaked the woman out a bit though.”

“Yeah, you with your stupid jokes.”

“I was trying to relax her.”

“I think all you managed was to freak her out. Poor girl was probably thinking you’d attack her in the night.”

Kevin laughed and tapped the steering wheel. “She kept herself locked away all night. She must have been peeing in a plant pot.”
