I never set out to become this person, and I never meant for things to get so out of hand. But when the law refused to hold the likes of Justin Dowel and Preston James accountable for the crimes they committed, I found myself standing in an alleyway at night.

It was dark, and they were convenient.

I had ways to end a life in a clean, relatively quiet and painless way. And so I did.

And never again did those bastards hurt another girl.

Hitting send on my text and dropping my head when, just a few feet to my left, Archer’s phone dings, I hold my breath as, huffing, he reaches into his pocket and takes out the device.

If it was anyone else, if only Archer wasn’t so blinded by me, I’m certain he would have figured this one out long before now. I know he’s smart enough, intuitive enough, to solve this crime. But every time his case led him closer to Dowel’s killer, he shook his head and turned another direction.

Because it simply isn’t possible, right? That I could be the vigilante.

And yet…

“Minka?” Archer slides off the arm of the couch and plops to the cushions instead. Then his eyes cut to the side of my face. His stare, hot enough to make me turn and meet his gaze.

His face drains white, and his pulse thuds against his neck. “No.”

“But you love me, right?” Sitting back on the couch, I rest my foot on the coffee table and relieve some of the ache in my knee. Then I drop my head back and close my eyes.

Because chances are I’m gonna be arrested in a few minutes.

“You said you love me enough to stick. But I’m a killer, Archer.”

Opening my eyes, I look to him, and pause when his stare punches deep into my gut. “Now you have to decide on which side of the law you stand.”
