“Yeah, well… Work brought me over here, and the new mayor keeps me busy. Jen said you’re not staying long?”

“We can’t,” he confirms. “But we’ll be back. Justin Lawrence is what we call amicromanagerwhen it comes to his precious daughters, so you’ll see us around.”

“Oh, it’s happening.” Seraphina taps my arm as the police chief steps toward the podium.

“I’ll see you when I see you.” I smile for Jen and nod for Corey, then I back away with my small entourage and escape the pack of reporters just as Chief Maron begins his little speech to kiss Lawrence’s annoyingly firm ass.

Turning on my heels when we’re clear, I grab Aubree and start toward the car. “Let’s go.”

“You didn’t think to introduce me?” Her voice is too loud. Too demanding. “He was hot!”

“Oh, for God’s sake, Emeri. Everyone is hot in your world. Do you wanna bang the daddy mayor or his son-in-law?”

“Why not both?” she exclaims. “Why are you so narrow-minded?”

I swing the car door open and turn to my friend with a snarl. “Get in the damn car. You’re not over Tim yet, so stop fooling yourself.”

“A cliché is a cliché for a reason,” she retorts, “and everyone knows to get over someone, you should—”

“If you finish that sentence, I’m gonna lock you in the freezer and make you sleep with the cadavers. Get in the car!”
