I turn at the movement from the living room, and stop at the sight of my own face filling the screen. I tilt my head to the side and watch the announcements drone on.

“That’s such a cool picture.” Kit cuddles closer and whispers in my ear. “All busted up like that, your smile is still sexy.”

I smirk and massage her thigh. “That was a good day. Definitely top ten.”

“Hey Jack, turn that up?” Jimmy calls as Jack rushes into the living room to watch.

“Bobby Kincaid, former world champion versus Tony Thomlassen, winner by default last year…”The announcer’s voice is barely less annoying than a nasally drone.“Kincaid is twenty-seven years old, weighs in at two hundred and thirty-nine pounds, and stands at six and a half feet…”

“Aren’t you embarrassed they tell the whole world how much you weigh?”

I laugh. “No babe, that’s a chick thing. Guys actually like to be heavier,” I flex my chest, “as long as it’s muscle.”

“Guys are weird,” Tink quips.

“Kincaid and Thomlassen were set to fight at the end of last year,”the announcer continues,“Kincaid was forced to forfeit when his girlfriend was attacked…in a coma… three weeks.”Anger rages in my veins. He talks about Kit like it’s his business.“… the accused are yet to be sentenced…”

“Jack, turn that shit off, please.” I’m done having my wife and her trauma being splashed all over the TV just for entertainment.

“No, it’s okay.” She kisses my jaw. “We’ve heard it all before. They’re just after ratings.”

“Exactly, which we won’t be giving them. Jack, turn it off.”

“But–”

“We’ll know the date before they do. Turn the fucking TV off!”

Thankfully, he stops with the back and forth and switches it off. He might be an asshole sometimes, but he knows when to quit. I get his excitement. He’s sixteen years old and his brother is on the TV, but hurting Kit just to feed that excitement isn’t okay.

“Any guesses why they’re stalling on the date?” Aiden asks. “Why won’t they commit?”

I shrug. “Dunno. Maybe they know something we don’t, but we’ll know soon enough.”

“Preference on when it goes ahead?”

“I kinda want it to be soon, but I need time to get ready, so Christmas or the new year would be best. That gives us time to work on Jimmy, get his done, then we can concentrate on me. Takes pressure off the gym if we’re not both going at the same time.”

It’ll suck to wait so long, but the fact remains, I’m not ready.

Jim kicked my ass today, and though that should be good, he’s still my smaller, younger brother. It’s not that he can’t be better, just that I shouldn’t be at the point that he’s making me tap.

“Did we miss anything while we were away, Iz?” Kit’s eyes are on Iz, but mine are on Jim. He seems so…adjustedto what’s going on, but I’ve yet to truly sit and watch his reactions.

“No. I had a scan last week, but nothing exciting happened. Bean’s good and measuring well. I’m considered low risk and everything is… good,” she answers with a shrug.

“Can you feel it move yet?” Tink asks her.

“Nah. The doctor said Bean’s hanging out in the back, so I might not feel him till much later. Probably not for another month or so.”

Tink watches Iz reverently. “Have you stopped and thought about the fact you have two hearts right now? Or that you’re growing another human being?”

Iz nods thoughtfully. “Yeah, it’s really special, despite the shitty circumstances.” She shrugs wistfully. “This is my baby, so it’s hard to be sad about it, you know? Everything else has gone to shit, but the baby is my one constant.”

Kit hesitates with furrowed brows. “Did you, ah… did you talk to Ben?”

“Yeah, I did–”

Jimmy stands abruptly and slams his chair against the wall. “Sorry. Gotta piss.” He steps out of the room and sends Iz’s eyes watery.
