“Shh. Leave him alone!”

At Iz’s chastising hiss, my eyes shoot open and stop less than an inch from her warm coffee eyes and smiling lips. “What’s going on?” Blinking. Shaking my head. Blinking again. I look into her eyes and wonder if I’m dreaming.

Being in bed with Iz; must be a dream.

Those white lips; real.

“What’s going on…?” Jon slams his fist into my thighs. “Is your heavy ass leg pinning my sister to her hospital bed. If you don’t get it off, I’ll rip it off for you.”

I look to my right, to his scowl as he stands over me. Then back to Iz, as she smiles down at me. Then back to Jon. I feel like I have cobwebs in the space my brain should be.

“What?” I turn back to Iz; her eyes are clearer. Her smile, less shaky.

Then bravely, she leans forward and places the softest, sweetest kiss I’ve ever received in my life on the center of my lips.

“Gag.” Jon turns away with a grunt.

She’s not his baby sister anymore. She’s just… she’smine. She belongs to me, now. And I belong to her.

“What time is it?”

She smiles and whispers so close, her breath tickles my cheek. “It’s seven thirty.”

“Shit, Bubs.” I work to sit up, but don’t make it far. My exhausted body is heavy as shit. “I only meant to nap for an hour. You must be starving.” I start to unravel our legs, since mine is, in fact, pinning hers down. “Let’s get you something for dinner, then we’ll go find Bean.”

“Ah, no.” Jon chuckles softly. “Seven thirty… A.M.”

“What?” I spin so fast, I almost fall off the bed. He must be punking me… I couldn’t possibly have… I wouldn’t have slept for… I do the math in my head. Eighteen hours. He’s saying I slept for eighteen hours? “No! What about Bean?”

“Actually.” Iz’s cheeks flush as she watches me scramble. “They made an exception and brought her to us. Twice. So I could feed her.”

“You did?” I’m such an asshole. “I slept in your bed while you stayed up to feed her?”

I’m disgusted in myself!

“It’s okay. Kit and Bobby stayed with her all night, and they brought her here to eat. She was here for half an hour each time. We got to snuggle, the three of us,” she whispers. “She wasn’t allowed to stay long, she’s still got her own IV, but the nurse said her sugars have been stable, so she might get to room with us tonight.”

“Really?” My heart pounds. We’re still in the hospital and my girls are still sick and in pain, but we’re one step closer to going home.

“Really, and I get to lose my IV tonight, too. Then I just take oral pills for the next couple weeks.”

“But you’re still so pale.”

She shrugs. “They said that’ll stick around for a little longer. It takes time to replenish what I lost.”

“Can they give you some? Like, donated blood?” The thought of a stranger’s blood coursing through her veins makes me ill, but if it’ll make her feel better… “They test donated blood, right?”

“They said I’m borderline… I can have some if I want.”

“So, you’ll have some, right?”

She scrunches her nose. “No, I don’t want any. I’m okay, plus, if I accept, I’ll have to stay in here another day. I don’t want another day away from Bean.”

“Bubs–”

“Seriously, I’m okay.” Gently, she blows hair from my eyes. “I’ll take iron supplements. You can cook me a giant steak when we get home.”

“Steak isn’t enough, Bubs. You’re being silly.”
