Mario Kart.

Tina looks to Jack. “Is that okay?”

“Yeah, we’ll watch her. No problem.” He squeezes Evie into his side. “Let’s put GTA on.”

Tina practically growls before he finishes his sentence.

“Kidding! Jesus, psycho.”

She glares and pokes her finger into the air between them. That’s all it takes. A silent threat. He dies if he steps out of line.

As soon as the girls disappear behind a closed bedroom door, Jon spins back. “What the hell just happened?”

I shake my head. I have no fucking idea. “What the hell are you doing here? This ain’t your home!” I look around at the guys. “Where’s Aiden?”

“He’s bringing pizza,” Bobby answers. “And we’re here because the girlsinsistedwe had to be here to welcome you home.”

“I told them it was a bad idea,” Jack gloats. “I’ve lived with a girl my whole life, and I’ve lived with Iz this year. Iknewhow this would go down.”

I simply shake my head. “Idiots. You’re all idiots.” Looking down to a still sleeping Bean, I sit the car seat on the floor and start work on her straps. “It’s just us, baby girl.”

“Can I hold her?”

“No!” I take her from the seat and hug her against my chest. “You hug Evie. Bean’s mine.”

“Is Wizzy sad?”

“She’s not sad,” Jack says. “She just missed her nap. She’s gone to lay down now, but she’ll be all better soon.”

I snort at his explanation. He could be really close to the mark. Turning with Lucy in my arms – I really need to work on using her real name, she can’t go by Bean her whole life – and walk to the recliner chair. Slumping in heavily, I cushion Bean and let out a deep sigh of relief.

It feels so good to be vertical. At home. Hospitals fucking suck.

Slowly, Evie stands and shyly approaches my recliner. Tiptoeing, she sneaks closer and closer unknowing that we all watch her progress. She’s kind of loud and outgoing with the girls, but deep inside, she’s painfully shy. Especially around men. “Can I sit too?”

It’s like the pretty girl just said yes to prom. “Yeah, come on up.” I help her climb, and smother my laugh when her tiny legs flail in the air. She squishes herself against my side and rests her head on my chest.

Laying there, she studies Bean so closely, they’re almost nose to nose.

Iz! It’s time to make Bean a baby sister.

Momentary pout forgotten, as soon as Aiden walks through the front door with dinner, Jack flips to his feet and sprints to the food.

I swear, you could actually lure Jack to his death if you just laid out pizza slices in a trail. He’d follow them without question, and if they said to, he’d walk right off a cliff.

“Can you bring that in here?” I call out. “I’m stuck under two beautiful ladies.”

Aiden steps into the living room and rolls his eyes. “Sure looks like a hardship, Jim.” He sets the pizza boxes on the coffee table. “Where are the girls?”

“They’re in the room.” Jack helps himself to the top box. “Told you she’d cry.”

“She cried?”

“Yeah.” I run my fingers through Evie’s soft curls. “But she’ll be okay.”

Aiden walks by and tickles Evie’s ribs and sends her into a fit of giggles. “Hey there, Smalls.”

Her tiny little elbows and knees dig into my muscles as she squirms to get comfortable again. Tiny little square teeth shimmer and chocolate breath bathes my face as she giggles. “Hey, Biggie.”
