I pushed on the handle and opened the door without knocking.

“By all means, make yourself at home,” Kane said. His reading glasses were perched on the end of his nose and papers were spread on every surface of his desk.

He looked like he’d come straight from my apartment last night. Except he had on a different tie. A red one.

“The receptionist directed me to come back.” I was more chippy than I normally would be. But wasn’t that always the case around Kane?

He smirked. “I can’t wait to tell him you called him a receptionist. His official title is Director of Affairs for Chief Legal Counsel.”

“My apologies.” I pressed my lips together to keep from smiling.

“He thinks I’ll pay him more because of the posh wording.” Kane grinned. “The man should know me better.”

“You’re obsessed with money.”

His face fell. I instantly regretted the words even if they were true.

“My father was a prosecutor for this city for over half a century. He put some of the most notorious criminals behind bars.” He took off his glasses. “They never paid him more than the normal cost of living raise. Not a bonus. Not a fruitcake. Nothing.”

“If he was unhappy about his wages, I’m sure he could’ve taken a job somewhere else.”

He glared. “My point is that this city owed him more than what they paid him. I’m not going to ever be cheated of what I’m owed.” He pointed. “And I won’t cheat anyone of what I owe them.”

“What’s the debt for saving someone’s life?” I asked quietly, not sure I wanted the answer.

“I assume you have the papers signed that we need to proceed.”

A niggling feeling at the base of my skull tingled. He’d ignored my question. What did I owe him? He’d never collected. I didn’t know the price. Would he come calling when I least expected?

“Yes.” I gathered myself and set the document on the desk. No need to risk unnecessarily touching him.

He reached for the papers as soon as I set them down. Our fingers brushed, and a jolt of electricity shocked me. How? How did he have this effect on me? I’d been in contact with countless people before and after him. No one ever did this to me.

“Let’s see here.” He examined the signature as if he hadn’t felt a thing.

Because he didn’t, JoJo. It’s only you who has this bizarre reaction to him.

“You can sit.”

“I thought you were too busy with your other case.”

He lifted a brow. “I can put you off if you like, but I’m willing to discuss this now.”

My rear hit the closest chair before I could think it through.

And there was that smug little tug on his lips. Kane Zegas had me exactly where he wanted me.

“The questions regarding this case don’t count toward our tally when it comes to personal affairs,” he said.

I lifted my chin. “I highly doubt you’ll answer my questions anyway.”

“If you’d prefer I didn’t...” He waved his hand dismissively.

I did want to know why he’d married my sister. I wanted to know why he’d stayed married to her. Why did he defend the people he did? Why did he want all this money if all he did was work? Why had he rescued me? Why was he kind in one breath and cruel in the next?

What would our relationship be like now if we’d been in each other’s lives all these years?

But I was here for Penelope.
