“You wouldn’t.”
I grinned. “Wouldn’t I?”
“It’s not a game, Kane.”
I let out a long sigh. “Loosen up, Barn. I’m giving you a hard time.”
“You think I’m stiff.”
“Iknowyou are.” I pulled on the scarf peeking out of her hair. “Except when you forget to be.”
“I can be fun.” Her insistence was cute.
“Oh yeah? What have you done fun lately?”
She looked away. There were several homeless people gathered around a bench. She opened her purse and gave them each some money as she murmured words I couldn’t hear.
I’d seen these people before and ignored them. I couldn’t save everybody and didn’t want to. But JoJo... she couldn’t walk by anyone in need. And it frustrated me as much as I admired the trait. One person couldn’t save the world, but she’d made a heck of an effort trying.
“I chased a man out of my apartment in my nightgown,” she said when she returned.
“I beg your pardon?”
She resumed our stroll, and I quickly caught up.
“You asked me what I’d done fun lately.”
I slung an arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer. She wiggled and squirmed trying to get out of my hold.
“And that fun involved me. See what you’ve been missing?”
She shoved at my side and got a good thwack to my stomach.
“JoJo? Are you all right?”
Immediately, she froze. Her hair was plastered to her face and her cheeks were flushed.
“Neil.”
She shoved at me again, but now I tightened my hold for a different reason.
I was taller than the guy, but he was younger. Or at least he hadn’t suffered as much stress as I had over the years and therefore had fewer lines around his eyes. He was good looking.Bastard.
And he had it bad for JoJo. It was in that puppy dog look on his face.
Did she have a thing for him too?
“I’m headed—”
“We’re in the middle of something.”
JoJo gaped at me. I was a little shocked myself. Pissing contests weren’t really my thing, considering I always won.
“I-I didn’t mean to interrupt.” He eventually found his voice and his courage. “JoJo and I work together and she looked... distressed.”
“What are you into? Trees or animals?”
“Kane.” She fired me a dirty look.
