Just how much was my deal with the devil going to cost me?

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

KANE

She’s not goingto pick up.

There’d been time for her andNeilto make it back to Earth Warriors. She was staring at the phone right now, debating whether or not she wanted to answer.

She should take my call with gratitude.

It wasn’t safe to go around without a cellphone, though I understood the appeal. Sometimes I missed the good old days when I wasn’t expected to be available twenty-four hours a day.

Did JoJo think if she didn’t answer the first time I called I would never call back?

“Why did you give me a phone? How did you do it so fast?”

I sat on the stoop of a brownstone and grinned. She’d answered.

“We live in an instantaneous world, Barn. Money helps speed things along too.”

“I don’t need your phone.”

“Yes, you do. I have to be able to reach you at any time.” I’d never given any other client a phone, mostly because I could reach them in jail or they already had one, though even if they hadn’t had one, I wouldn’t have bothered. But that was beside the point. “And don’t blow me off again.”

“If you didn’t act like a jerk, I wouldn’t,” she said, her voice rising.

“It’s who I am, sweetheart. Take it or leave it.”

“I’d like to leave it. Ididleave it for a long time.”

“But you came back. And you need me.”

“You need me. Otherwise you wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of giving me this phone.”

Oh she was all kinds of riled up now. Perfect.

“It’s beeping. Kane, what is this noise?”

I laughed. “A reminder we have a date tonight.”

“An appointment,” she corrected.

“Same thing.”

“But this says six o’clock. I thought you had plans—never mind. Where should I meet you? I have to try to convince someone to let me buy a piece of property from them this afternoon.”

I sat up straighter. “Where?”

“Not that it’s any of your concern, but a park,” she said haughtily.

“The one you were arrested near?”

“Don’t tell me I can’t do it. Or that I can’t save everyone.” A creak sounded as if she’d dropped into a chair.

“I’ve always supported you.”

“Making fun of me isn’t support.”
