“Go on before I change my mind.”

He scrambled to gather his things and hit the kill switch on the computer instead of properly shutting it down. Good thing that machine automatically backed up every minute to a cloud server.

I flicked off the lights, and he locked the door behind us.

“Be downstairs when I get there.”

“Are you talking to me? Because you sound awfully—”

“Do you want me to come to the door? Collect you like this is adate?” I exaggerated the word. It was just too tempting to rile her up... and probably not the best way to start a redemption weekend.

“I’ll be downstairs.”

She hung up, and I grinned. This was going to be fun.

“Technically,if we’re doing a redo of the weekend, you’d already be at the house.”

We were thirty minutes into the trip and these were the first words she’d spoken other than the curt hello.

I glanced at her. “I’m an odds guy. And odds are if I weren’t driving you to the Hamptons, you wouldn’t go.”

She pressed her lips together. “Why are you driving my grandfather’s car?”

It was a 1937 Rolls Royce he’d bought new.

“I thought you’d have asked before now.” I risked another glance at her. Damn, she was pretty. “He gave it to me.”

“Maybe you aren’t so good at odds.”

I smirked. “Maybe I’m not.”

She sank farther into the seat. “We should just go back to the city. What are we going to do? Pretend like we’re meeting for the first time?”

“Hell, no. I wouldn’t change anything.”

Her eyes bulged. “Then what are we doing?”

“Making more memories.”

She blinked at me. “Forgive me if I don’t want more of that weekend.”

I touched her knee. “Was it really that bad? Most people you meet you introduce yourself, shake hands, and forget it as soon as they’re out of sight. It’s boring.” I squeezed. “Tell me that wasn’t the most interesting meet of your life.” I leaned closer and spoke in her ear. “I know you haven’t forgotten it.”

Her leg stiffened under my touch, but I didn’t miss the way her breathing picked up pace.

“I definitely haven’t forgotten it.”

Something about hearing that out loud satisfied me. I’d made a mark on her. And if it was anything like the one she’d left on me, it was as memorable as the day it happened.

“Me neither.”

“Kane...”

There was a wariness in her voice, but I liked the way my name sounded on her lips.

“Do you know why I like being around you?”

She fiddled with the ends of her scarf and swallowed hard. “I’d hate to see how you behave toward someone you don’t like being around.”
