Alma sailed through the air with a squeal. I couldn’t breathe as she landed with a splash in the water.

Please come up. Please come up.

Without realizing it, one of my legs had moved so my foot was on the sand.

Come up, Alma.

After excruciating seconds, she broke the surface of the water with the beauty of a dolphin.

“Kane!” She grinned as she splashed water at him.

His rich, deep, carefree laughter vibrated through my body.

I squeezed my eyes shut and willed my heartbeat to slow.

I’ll never have that.

Behind my closed lids, my eyes stung.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself.

My heart raced harder. I tried to draw in a deep breath, but my lungs wouldn’t work. The water had always steadied me. Now the sound of the waves crashing on the shore only served to shove my panic to the forefront.

I dug my toes in the sand, desperate for anything to keep me from spiraling.

I couldn’t open my eyes and see the water. But if I kept them closed, what was in my mind’s eye would be worse.

“Toss me a towel.”

The voice sounded far away. It had a deep caressing timbre as it slashed through my memories.

“I know you’re not asleep.”

The past fizzled when the voice spoke again.

I blinked my lids open. Kane was no longer in the water. He was mere feet away, glistening in the sun like a god. His hair was slicked back as water droplets from the sea clung to his skin as they slid down his body.

“They’re right there.” I pointed to the stack beside me. The words had come out shaky. Like he affected me when nothing was further from the truth.

“Suit yourself.” He leaned over me, his torso whispering against mine as he stretched. Water droplets dripped onto my stomach and chest. Thank God I’d worn a one-piece bathing suit.

He straightened, but made no move to step back as he toweled off. More beads of water flung from him and landed on me.

I wanted to brush them off my arms, but I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of knowing he bothered me.

“You should go for a swim. The water’s nice.” He hung the towel around his neck and gripped both ends. “Do you need some floaties? There’s probably a four-year-old around here somewhere who would let you borrow theirs.”

What did Alma see in this ass?

“I appreciate your concern,” I said sickeningly sweet. “But I’m fine right here.”

“Then why are you holding that chair like it’s the only thing keeping you from death?” His blue gaze pierced into me.

I tried to loosen my grip to prove him wrong. But I was pinned in place. If anything, I held on tighter.

“Kane, let’s go get ready for the party, baby.”

I started at Alma’s voice. His eyes remained locked on mine. In my peripheral vision, my sister latched onto his side. Even that wasn’t enough to take his attention from me.
