All of the pain and worry I was experiencing right then was worth it. She was worth it.

“Take your time. When you’re ready to come back to us, I’ll be waiting.”

My cheeks felt wet. I swiped the moisture away with my free hand and swallowed past the knot in my throat.

“I thought you’d be safer in my SUV,” I said bitterly.

Maybe if she hadn’t been, she wouldn’t have survived.

I straightened. She’d been in my car.

My car.

What if Alma hadn’t meant to hurt Penelope?

What if she’d meant to kill me?

JOJO

“Call Judge Robard.”

Kane burst into the room we’d commandeered as our own, wild-eyed.

He’d been gone a while. The rims of his eyes were red, and there was a frantic energy about him.

Patrick pulled out his phone.

“I want the divorce granted immediately.” Kane paced in the small space between the door and the table. Where was this renewed fire coming from?

I wanted him to be divorced immediately too for selfish reasons, but it wasn’t at the forefront of my mind, considering the circumstances.

“I’ve informed her of the situation,” Patrick said. “I’ll call her back to push for a special hearing.”

“Penelope was inmySUV.”

I gaped at him. “Do you think Alma was trying to hurt you?”

“I hope I was her target instead of Penelope,” he said through gritted teeth.

Daniel stood and left the room with his phone pressed to his ear.

“I’ve filed the restraining order too,” Patrick said.

Kane’s jaw tightened. “I don’t want her within a hundred miles of Penelope.”

I’d never seen him so angry. Not even when he discovered what I’d been keeping from him all these years.

“A thousand,” he grated out.

I reached out and grabbed his hand. When I pulled, he sank in the chair beside me.

The wildness was gone from his eyes. Desperation had replaced it.

“I can’t think straight,” he said so only I could hear. “I just want her well.”

“Me too.”
