“Someone showed me the important things in life. And there are no past presidents’ pictures on any of them.”

Patrick took his wife’s fingers in his. “I knew being a father would be good for you.”

Kane narrowed his gaze. “Don’t start thinking you’re smarter than I am.”

“I am. I found love and kids before you did. And you thought I was crazy.”

“You are crazy,” Kane and Marlow said at the same time.

Patrick shrugged.

“Thank you. For being here. For working tirelessly. Both of you,” Kane said. “You should get out of here. Go be with your kids. Hug them extra hard.”

“We’ll come by tomorrow,” Marlow said.

Patrick and Kane did a double take. What had she been like before? They constantly seemed surprised when she was kind.

“Stay at the house as long as you like. Make yourself at home,” I said.

“Don’t worry. We will.” Patrick stood. “I’m going to work on the divorce front.Idon’t want that witch to get anything, just on the principle of it.” He slung an arm around Marlow. “Besides, once I’m done with all your legal woes, I can focus more on Paths of Purpose again.”

“That’s a shelter, right? For abused women and children?” I asked, pretty sure I’d heard of the organization.

“Yep. Mrs. Quinn, who you met earlier with my dad, is the one who runs it,” Marlow said.

Her father and the kind woman had stopped by the hospital earlier to pick up their children.

“And you’ve done legal work for them?”

“I have. I am. When I’m not helping this guy.” Patrick pointed at Kane.

“Maybe you can help Kane and Penelope at Earth Warriors too.” We needed all the great legal minds we could get. And maybe we could expand our base. Help more people.

“Sure thing.”

“We’ll bring you some clothes tomorrow. Anything else you need?” Marlow asked.

Kane looked at me, and I shook my head.

“No,” he said. “Be safe.” He shook Patrick’s hand.

I stood and hugged both of them. “Thank you.”

“She’s going to be fine.”

It was the first time anyone had said that out loud. And I appreciated Patrick’s positivity.

He had to be right. I’d do everything humanly possible to make sure he was.

Once they were gone, Kane and I were alone.

The room was quiet. Too quiet.

Daniel’s wife, Vivian, had excused herself to check in on her friend Muriella. Daniel had disappeared moments ago.

And now, there was just us.

I had no words. My body and mind were completely wrung dry. And I felt guilty for being tired when Penelope had to keep fighting.
