I pushed out of my chair when I caught the uncertain expression on Kane’s face. He’d stood beside me through these difficult days. The least I could do was support him when he needed it.

“Mr. and Mrs. Zegas, it’s been a long time, but it’s lovely to see you again. I’m JoJo Cunningham.”

Kane’s mother blinked at me a few times. “Alma’s sister?”

I cringed inwardly. Wasn’t I always Alma’s sister?

Kane put an arm around my shoulders. “Penelope’s mother.”

She looked back and forth between us. His father furrowed his brow as if trying to make sense of Kane’s statement.

I filled with pride that Kane saw me for who I was.

And my primary rolewasn’tAlma’s sister.

“Oh. Um . . .” His mother put a hand to her chest.

Kane’s father cleared his throat. “We can sort that out later. We’d like to meet our granddaughter.”

Kane led them toward the bed. Nancy discreetly shuffled away. That woman was the epitome of a role model. I couldn’t force Penelope, but when she was awake and well, I hoped we both could spend more time with her.

Kane’s mother gasped when she saw my baby.

She huddled against her husband, who put an arm around her. I couldn’t see their expressions, but their posture was rigid.

Penelope’s injuries were confronting.

Being her grandparents didn’t automatically mean they’d love her. But judging from the quick swipe of his mother’s hand on her face, I guessed they already did.

Nancy tugged on my arm. “We should go. I’ll come back tomorrow.”

I grabbed her hands. “You don’t know what it means to us that you’re here.”

“Where else would we be?” she asked as if the gesture were nothing.

“Thank you for the lasagna. You didn’t have to do that.” I squeezed.

“I’ll whip up something for tomorrow too. Somebody has to make sure you eat.”

I opened my mouth to protest that she’d already brought enough food for a week, but thought better of it. Cooking for others made her happy. I was sure the facility staff would love if we shared what we couldn’t eat.

“Don’t go to any trouble.”

“It’s no trouble at all.” She kissed my cheek.

I walked the three of them to the elevator and hesitated as I approached Penelope’s room.

Should I give Kane some time alone with his parents? Did they need the space without a stranger intruding?

I peeked in. His parents now sat at Penelope’s bedside.

As if he sensed my presence, Kane looked at me with anI need youexpression.

Confidently, I went to him, taking the chair next to him.

On his side.

“She looks just like you,” his mother said in quiet awe as she shifted her gaze to Kane.
