“Not whatever,” Kane said as if appalled.

“Whatever,” she countered.

I smiled to myself. Whether Kane realized it or not, Penelope was so strong-willed, she most definitely would do whatever she pleased.

“I’m glad you called.” His father touched the side of the bed.

“What can we do?” his mother asked, sounding at a loss. “What do you need?”

“For you to be here for her.”

His father’s expression became serious. “You can count on us for that.”

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

KANE

What a weird day.

All wasn’t healed between my parents and me, but we’d made great strides today.

Because of Penelope.

She was responsible for all the good things happening lately.

She’d led JoJo back to me.

Obviously finding out I was her father was one of the greatest joys of my life.

And she’d opened the dialogue with my parents.

What amazed me most was that she did it all effortlessly.

Her chest rose and fell in that same rhythm it had been for days. The one the machine dictated.

I longed for the time she was strong enough to attempt to breathe on her own. But I wasn’t sure I’d be able to handle it.

If she flat-lined, I’d go crazy.

I was already going out of my mind. My world continued to turn upside down.

We didn’t leave that facility. And it was odd how it felt like the life I’d had a week ago never existed.

I’d blown off my cases to Whitley, unable to concentrate on anything except Penelope’s recovery. I didn’t answer my phone unless it was something pertinent. I’d neglected everything I thought was important before Penelope and JoJo stormed into my universe.

And I didn’t miss any of it.

Which made me second-guess if I needed to continue as I had been. Would I feel differently once Penelope had recovered? Once my mind was free to focus on something else?

Or was I permanently changed?

My phone buzzed with a text.

Do you have time to meet?

My investigator. The one I had chasing down leads on exonerating Penelope from that kid’s murder.

Normally, I wouldn’t consider bringing him here. We met at my office sometimes, but that felt more discreet than this place.
