I pulled my knees to my chest and rocked back and forth. Kane paced and cursed and yanked on his hair.

Our eyes met, reflections of fear and pain.

If we don’t, she dies.

No. She wasn’t going to die.

I slapped my hand over my mouth to cover up the sob. The motion wasn’t enough to stop it.

I couldn’t break down now. Penelope needed me to be strong.

But I felt so weak. So lost. So terrified.

Kane rushed toward me. I bolted out of the chair and flung myself into his arms.

“Let it out, Barn,” he whispered.

I couldn’t hold in my tears any longer.

They flowed down my face despite being buried against Kane’s chest. My entire body heaved as uncontrollable sobs took over.

Kane rubbed my back in a soothing rhythm, yet I barely felt it.

Poor Penelope.

She’d been through so much.

“It’s not fair,” I wailed.

I beat on Kane’s shoulders. “It’s not fair.”

Over and over I shouted until I couldn’t stand.

“It’s not fair.”

Kane caught me as I wilted and steered me to the sofa.

“No, it’s not.” He pulled me close and dabbed at my tear-soaked cheeks with a tissue.

“It should be me. Not my sweet baby.”

My heart broke into a million pieces as I thought about Penelope having to overcome yet another life-threatening hurdle.

“It shouldn’t have happened at all.” Kane was quiet, lethally so.

“I need to be stronger for her. I-I don’t know how to do this. Every day she fights, and I can’t do anything.” The tears flowed so fast, Kane couldn’t catch them all.

“She knows we’re here.”

“Does she?” I shouted. “I’m so tired of hearing we have to wait and see. Look what that got us. She’s bleeding internally.”

I didn’t care that the door was open, that anyone could hear.

My anger at the entire situation consumed me.

Alma.

She’ddone this.
