Violence is not the way.

That was before she attempted to kill my daughter. Nothing was off the table now.

The thought of Penelope lying unconscious coupled with Alma’s taunting smile nearly sent me over the edge.

I’m going to kill her.

I’m going to murder my sister to protect my daughter.

“Your will is irrelevant anyway. Once you and Penelope are out of the way, I’ll be her closest living relative.”

“Don’t forget her father.” I hurtled toward her again.

She stumbled back when I made impact but managed to keep her balance by gripping my wrists.

“He’s not on the birth certificate,” she said triumphantly.

“Neither are you.”

Money was a powerful thing. Given enough to the right people in the right places, it could buy almost anything one desired.

Grandma Josephine had arranged so it appeared as ifI’dgiven birth to Penelope. Of course the people at the private facility knew otherwise, but there was no birth certificate with Alma’s name on it.

We’d felt it best to protect the baby from Kane. With a piña colada and two new designer purses, Alma had been amenable to anything.

Little did I know at the time that the person I needed to protect Penelope from was my sister.

Color drained from her face as realization dawned. There was literally no evidence that she was Penelope’s biological mother.

“Then Plan A it is.” She dug her claws into my wrists.

Dots of blood appeared on my skin. That pain was nothing compared to watching my daughter suffer.

“Why are you doing this?” I screamed.

“So you’ll know what it feels like to have your sister take everything away.”

“I didn’t take anything from you!”

“Daddy loved you best. So did Grandma Josephine.” She pouted like a small child.

“That’s not true,” I insisted.

“They left you most everything so it is.” She wrestled me around, those claws now in my upper arms.

“The money means nothing.” My cry echoed into the night air.

She stilled. “Then give it to me. Prove that it means nothing.”

I wasn’t falling for this.

“You had a husband for twenty years that if you’d just given him a chance, he could’ve made you happy.” She’d squandered the incredible gifts she’d been given. His love would’ve been worth more than anything.

She snorted. “Kane? He’s a pushover and a fool.”

How dare she speak of him that way?

I struggled to get my hands on her. My limbs moved of their own accord, all rationale completely gone.
