He let out a long sigh. “I hope you at least got what you were looking for.”
“I did, and I didn’t.” I squeezed Kane’s hand before taking the chair next to Whitley. “Part of me hoped this was all a giant mistake. But . . .” I didn’t want to say the truth out loud. That Alma was a monster of a human being.
“Do you remember anything?”
I sighed. “I went alone. We argued. It got physical.” Shame filled me. I wasn’t a violent person. What kind of example was I to Penelope? “She pushed me in the water because she knows I can’t swim. I thought Kane was dead. Then I woke up here.”
“Alma is nowhere to be found.”
I sat up straight. “She knows where Penelope is.”
“No.”
He bolted from his chair, phone already pressed to his ear as he disappeared into the hall.
I thought the police had her in custody.
She was loose? Whereabouts unknown?
What if she went after Penelope?
I’d never forgive myself for not being there.
What a mess I’d made.
There were so many things I’d done I’d never regret. The risks had been worth the reward. But my mountain of regrets was beginning to pile up.
One of them was not seeing Alma for who she was. For letting her hurt the people I love most.
We were the ones suffering by her hand while she was free.
The thought of the hatred in her eyes sent a chill down my spine. The naive part of me wanted to believe this was the end of the mess. That she was done.
The reasonable part recognized the woman who used to be my sister wouldn’t stop until she had what she wanted.
“Have you finally figured out I’m not playing? I want my inheritance.”
And the only way to achieve that was with all of us . . .
Dead.
CHAPTERTHIRTY-THREE
KANE
“Let me out of here.”
I struggled to sit up.
I had no idea how long I’d been in the hospital, but I’d had enough. Penelope needed me.
And I needed to see her face.
Updates from Dr. Hotshot weren’t enough.
Besides, I was tired of lying around, especially if I couldn’t do anything fun in this bed.
A bolt of pain down my back laid me flat once more.
