On my way.

Holt returned with two fistfuls of drinks. “Dad’s on his way.”

“Dad?” I didn’t want him to know what I’d done. He’d be ashamed I’d been with a married woman.

“He’ll understand,” Holt said as if reading my thoughts.

“We’re gonna need another chair. Patrick’s on his way too.”

“I’ll go order another burger.”

Chapter Thirty-Two

Trish

“I’ll kill him.”

Baker took one look at my face when she opened her door the next morning and was murderous.

I held up both of my hands. “Not his fault. This is all on me.”

I cradled Ella against my chest. I had her, and we’d be okay. We always were eventually.

“Let me get you some breakfast. Then we’ll talk.”

“I can’t eat.” The thought of food turned my stomach.

Baker started to protest but stopped when I sank into the chair at her desk. “You told him the truth,” she surmised.

“Yeah.”

“And he couldn’t handle Ella?” Her angry tone made me shiver.

“He was okay with that. It was the still married bit that pissed him off.” The hard look on his face had shattered any hope I’d had that we could get through this. He wouldn’t even listen. Granted, I hadn’t tried very hard to make him understand.

“Did you tell him . . .”

“Never had a chance.” I scratched my head. “I don’t know that I would have anyway.”

“If you want a relationship with him, you’ll have to.”

“That’s not going to happen now. Besides, I don’t want him to know. I don’t want him to see me that way.” I struggled with shame over what had happened to me. That I’d been gullible enough to trust my husband. It was a miracle I’d made it as far as I had with Andrew, but he was very different. I trusted him.

And now it was over.

“Damn.”

“I know.” I pressed my palms to my stinging eyes. “It hurts. More than it should.”

Baker wrapped her arms around me and Ella, who was suspiciously quiet. I rested my head on her shoulder and sent up a prayer of gratitude that I had her in my life.

“I hate that it’s over.”

I looked at her incredulously. “You didn’t even like him.”

“I like what he did for you. He made you happy. I’d never want that taken from you.”

“I have to focus on the positives.”
