“I was thinking about it,” she said hesitantly.

“You are?” I wanted Baker to move on with her life but felt a little afraid of what I’d do without her around the shelter.

Vivian clapped her hands together. “Roommates. Perfect. That will help with the rent.”

Baker gave me an apologetic look, which turned to horror when what Vivian had said registered.

“No.”

“Great idea.”

Baker and Holt answered at once.

He grinned.

She scowled.

“I just love solving problems.” Vivian beamed at Daniel, and he gave her a wary look.

“Enjoy your evening,” he said, steering her away from the table.

“I think you should take them up on it,” Andrew said, much to everyone’s surprise.

“You do?” Holt set his fork down on his plate.

“Yeah. It’s a good opportunity. You can save some money and figure out what you want to do.”

“Who said I needed money?” he asked defensively. “Because I’m not a big-time lawyer, I don’t have any money? Or is it because I like to garden?”

Andrew shook his head, but before he could speak, Patrick chimed in. “I know lots of big-time lawyers who don’t have a pot to piss in because they didn’t manage their money properly.”

“Speaking from experience?” Holt shot back.

“Not that it’s any of your damn business, but no.” Patrick slung back a swig of wine.

“I didn’t mean it that way,” Andrew said.

“When someone offers help, it’s hard to take it. But I’ve learned that it’s okay. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have my business,” I said quietly.

“And I wouldn’t be at the magazine,” Baker chimed in.

The waiters arrived with our next course. Holt stabbed at his steak while Andrew looked on helplessly to make things right.

“I’m only thinking about it,” Baker said softly to me.

“I’m happy for you,” I said truthfully. “You deserve it.”

“Do you two live together?” Marlow asked.

We both glanced at Mrs. Quinn. “The turnout for this event is flattering. It’s going to help so much, won’t it, girls?”

I breathed a sigh of relief at the change of subject. Marlow looked dissatisfied but said nothing else.

“It’s fantastic,” Mr. Dixon said.

“I didn’t know you were coming,” I said where only Andrew could hear.

“Would it have mattered?” he asked sharply.
