“It’s a long story. Idiot thinks he’s funny. He always puts his grandmother up to his dirty work.” Sonya looked out the window of the truck and let out a low whistle. “This one gets the prize for hottest customer ever.”

I followed her gaze.Thump. Thump. Thump. Andrew’s gaze locked with mine, and an easy grin lit his face.

“You know him?” Sonya elbowed me in the side.

“Yeah.” My voice sounded faraway. I couldn’t stop staring at the man who had consumed my thoughts for days.

“Hello, Bright Side,” he said, slipping his hands into his pockets.

“I thought you’d already given up on your duties.” The words came out with more bite than I meant. Andrew appeared slightly taken aback, but he recovered quickly.

“Nope. Things didn’t quite go according to plan yesterday.” A shadow crossed his face. Asking him what was wrong was on the tip of my tongue, but he carried on before I could open my mouth. “No citation I hope?”

“All good. Looks like your services are no longer needed.” I dusted off my hands on my jeans even though nothing was on them.

“Ouch.” His warm eyes held mine. “Does that mean I’m banned from eating here?”

“We’ll still take your money,” I said.

Sonya grabbed my arm, her head bobbing back and forth as she looked between me and Andrew.

“What?” I whispered as she dug her fingers into my flesh.

She gave me a look I couldn’t decipher before flashing a smile at Andrew. “Already know what you want? Or do you need a minute?”

“I know exactly what I want.” Andrew’s eyes were on me when he spoke, a heat in them that made me hot all over.

“We’re out of coconut cake. Some old people nearly got in a fight over it.” Sonya rolled her eyes, and I stifled a grin.

“When something is worth it, you’ve gotta duke it out,” Andrew teased.

“Yes.” Sonya pinched my arm with one hand and pointed two fingers at him with the other. “I’m Sonya, by the way. Since it seems you might become a regular, we should at least introduce ourselves.”

“Andrew Dixon. And I’d like the same thing I had the other day. Trish knows.” He winked at me. I didn’t know what to do, so I stood there like an idiot who’d never talked to a man before.

“Coming right up,” Sonya said. She dragged me out of sight from the window toward the kitchen. “Bright Side?” she whispered, her tone demanding an explanation.

“It’s nothing.”

“It doesn’t look like nothing.” She glanced back toward the window. “It doesn’tfeellike nothing.”

“He’s just a nice guy.”

I boxed up the stuffed chicken breast and potatoes, much to Sonya’s annoyance.

“You’re being evasive,” she accused with a pout.

“There’s nothing to tell,” I said patiently, though my nerves fluttered a bit knowing that he was on the other side of a very thin wall.

“Bull honkey.”

“What?” I snorted, nearly dropping the box as I loaded it into a bag.

“You heard me.” She covered my hand with hers. “I’m not trying to push.” Her eyes went soft, and I blocked out the reason. I couldn’t think about that here. Not now. “But I think you should go sit with him while he eats lunch.”

“I can’t do that.”

“We’re not busy. Just talk to him. What’s the worst that could happen?”
