“Think about it. When you’re ready, I’d be honored to see the love of your life.”

“I’ll think about it.”

I tilted my head to the side. “Do you have any children?”

“No. Stella was always great with them, but we never had any of our own.” He shook his head. “I was working all the damn time anyway. Hell, she was too.”

“What did you do?”

“We owned a large conglomerate of restaurants. I sold it when I lost her.”

“I have no right to ask—”

“Never start a sentence that way. Especially when you’re going to do it anyway.”

I smiled and shook my head. “Can you help me?” I held up both of my hands. “I don’t mean money. Maybe sometime I can come where you can keep an eye on Stella, and I’ll pick your brain. I want to find a permanent location and keep the food truck. I’d love your insight.”

“Will you have the chocolate cake every day?”

“Absolutely.”

“Then we’ll talk. I know the perfect place for your restaurant. Come on Sunday.”

“I’ll bring my daughter. But fair warning, she’s a screamer.”

“A grumpy old man can’t be any more pissed off than he already is.” He glanced down the street, anxious to get back to his wife.

“See you tomorrow, Mr. Hardaway.”

He swiped his hand through the air and took off.

Chapter Forty-Six

Andrew

“It’s six eighteen.”

I picked up the pace when Trish threw a hand up. Officer Wilson was poised outside her food truck with ticket book in hand.

“I thought we were past this.” I went straight to Trish’s side.

“The rules are the rules. I already gave her a warning.”

Was he serious? “Maybe you need a few more weeks off.”

He grinned and slammed his ticket book shut. “I’m just giving you a hard time, Trish.”

She relaxed and tried, failing miserably, to frown at him. “Not funny.”

“I really had you both going.”

“I was going to cut you off.” She motioned toward the truck.

The smile on Timothy’s face fell. “You wouldn’t? I hoped you had some leftovers for me tonight.”

She pointed at him. “You almost got yourself cut off permanently.” There wasn’t an ounce of malice in her tone. “Let me go see what I can find for you.” She hopped in the truck, then stuck her head out the door. “Will you watch for the cops? I don’t want to get a parking ticket.”

We both laughed. I abruptly stopped when I saw the figure I’d recognize anywhere pushing a stroller toward us.
