“You’re never too old for that.” Victor grinned. “Guy she’s with looks like she can eat him alive. She needs a man.”

He demolished the rest of his dessert and stood, smoothing his tie and straightening his jacket.

“If he punches you, I’m leaving your ass here.” I signaled to the waiter to bring the bill.

“As long as she ends up in my bed, it’ll be worth it.”

I turned around to see who had his attention.

No.

I grabbed Victor’s arm as he sauntered by. He looked at my grasp on him.

“What the hell, Dixon?”

“That’s my mother,” I grated.

Victor smiled devilishly. “This is too good.” He motioned in the direction where my mother and her lover were having dinner. “That fox is your mother?”

“She’s a venomous snake, and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll stay away from her.”

His smile fell. “You’ve got mommy issues?” If anyone else said that to me, I’d be furious. But I knew Victor. That was his way of showing concern.

“Like you wouldn’t believe.”

I glanced back toward her.

A mistake.

Even at the distance between us, there was pain etched in her features. She deserved whatever misery she felt.

Feigning nonchalance, I turned around and released Victor’s arm. “Let’s get out of here.”

I tossed a wad of bills on the table and stood.

“Lead the way.” Victor gestured toward the entrance.

We wove through the tables. Red hot rage consumed me.Why her of all people at this restaurant?

A delicate hand grasped my shoulder.

“Andrew.”

I’d almost forgotten how melodic her voice was. The sound singed my already raw nerves.

I spun just before I reached the door. “Are you following me? We seem to be running into each other a lot lately.”

I glared at her, and she recoiled, her face going ashen. “I-I’m not.” She straightened her shoulders. And she was still touching me.Stop. Touching. Me.“Can we talk?”

“When I was seven, I would have said yes. Now, you aren’t worth my time,” I sneered and brushed her hand off me. “If you see me again, donotspeak to me.”

I was halfway out the door when her hoarse voice made my steps falter. “I’m sorry.”

Balling my fists at my sides, I moved for the exit.

“I love you,” she choked out.

I whirled around to face her. “You do not get to say that to me. Ever.” I stepped closer until I loomed over her petite frame. “You proved over and over that you didn’t, you don’t, and you never will.”
